Samsung and TSMC hope AMSL's new machines will help address the chip shortage. A new Elizabeth Holmes documentary is on its way.

And Retroid just teased its take on a dual-screen handheld for Nintendo DS fans. It's Tuesday, September 8th, and here's a quick look at some of the news happening in the sphere of tech this morning from Engadget.

Samsung and TSMC will join Intel in adopting ASML's latest high-NA extreme ultraviolet lithography chip fab machines. The three companies also unveiled a new initiative to adopt larger 12-inch photo masks that will hopefully boost manufacturing yields and lower chip making costs. Samsung and TSMC will deploy ASML's NA EUV tech by 2028 and 2030, respectively, while 12-inch photo masks are expected to arrive in advanced node production by 2033

Currently, ASML's high NA EUV technology has only been deployed by Intel on its 18A process for select core Ultra Series 3 processors. The company is also working on an advanced version called 18AP, under consideration by Apple for its next-gen A Series iPhone processors. ASML boasted that Intel has built more than a million wafers using the new process. Now, both TSMC and Samsung, the world's number one and two chip manufacturers, have committed to the high NA EUV tech as well. Samsung plans to build DRAM memory products using NA EUV by 2028, while TSMC said it will deploy the tech in advanced nodes starting in 2030 As Intel showed though, ramping up the tech is not that easy, and both companies may run into bottlenecks that thwart their planned production dates. ASML also announced that it has created an initiative with TSMC and Samsung to transition to large format 12-inch photo masks used to stencil chip patterns on the wafers from the current standard of 6 inches. Another large chip maker, SK Hynix, is evaluating its own participation in the consortium. TSMC noted the larger masks will increase Fav productivity, lower chip making costs, and remove stitching constraints. The new masks will allow companies to print the finer features of the NAEUV process onto larger chips. Currently, processors made with this process must have features stitched together, something that adds complexity and cost to the manufacturing process. The 12-inch photo masks will allow Favs to make those chips without stitching, reducing cost and complexity. ASML will start testing 12-inch photo mask Favs in 2031, with production expected to start in 2033

Well, in case you haven't gotten enough of the Elizabeth Holmes saga, there's a new documentary about the Theranos founder from A24, and it sure does look unsettling. You can see everything as the latest bizarre chapter in Holmes' story from directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. After two previous documentaries and a Hulu mini-series, you might think there's little to add to Holmes' story. But you can see everything as apparently a bizarre coda to the events that ultimately led to her downfall. It was filmed in 2023, in the days before she reported to prison to serve out an 11-year sentence for defrauding Theranos investors. And Holmes apparently gave Fielder and Oppenheim extensive access in an effort to clear her name, according to the New York Times. The result is a three-hour-long documentary that looks as strange and uncomfortable as you might expect from the startup founder, who once claimed her blood-testing startup would revolutionize healthcare. Fielder, known for his comedic roles, features prominently in the teaser released by A24. The teaser doesn't give much away, but the film reportedly features some innovative recreations, in addition to Holmes' intense conversations with Fielder. There's also, apparently, a conversation in which Holmes and her partner discuss plans to launch a new and improved Theranos. Given the public's past fascination with Holmes and Theranos, the latest chapter will likely draw its share of curious viewers. And in case you were wondering, Holmes herself seems more enthusiastic about this portrayal than others. The startup founder, who has turned into somewhat of a prolific poster on X in the last year, shared the trailer from her account. You can see everything will be released in theaters in October.
