Salesforce and Nvidia Unveil Koa: The Open-Weight Reasoning Model That Could Cut Enterprise AI Costs—and Challenge OpenAI, Anthropic and Frontier Labs
The Daily AI Chat
September 15, 2026
Salesforce and Nvidia have just introduced a new artificial-intelligence model that could change who controls the enterprise AI market—and how much businesses have to pay for reasoning. Called Koa, the model is Salesforce’s first purpose-built reasoning system.

Welcome to The Daily AI Chat. This podcast was curated by our human friend, Fred, and we are your dedicated AI hosts.
Julie Bort (0:16)
Hey, everyone. Great to be here.
SPEAKER_1 (0:17)
So I want you to imagine something for a second. Imagine your company's entire proprietary client list just being leaked to your biggest competitor.
Julie Bort (0:27)
Oh, wow. Nightmare scenario right there.
SPEAKER_1 (0:29)
Total nightmare. And all because one of your sales reps casually asked a Cloud-based chat bot to draft a follow-up email. Yep.
Julie Bort (0:38)
It happens more than you think.
SPEAKER_1 (0:39)
It really does. And that exact fear is, well, it's basically causing Fortune 500 executives to just lose sleep right now. It's sparking this outright enterprise rebellion against the biggest names in artificial intelligence.
Julie Bort (0:53)
It really is a massive shift.
SPEAKER_1 (0:54)
Yeah.
So today, we're pulling back the curtain on this monumental pivot happening in the tech world. Our roadmap for this deep dive is a really fascinating article from TechCrunch.
Julie Bort (1:04)
I love this piece.
SPEAKER_1 (1:05)
Yeah. It was published on September 15th, 2026 And we're looking at the shockwaves coming out of Salesforce's giant Dreamforce tech conference.
Julie Bort (1:13)
Right. The Koa announcement.
SPEAKER_1 (1:14)
Exactly. Specifically, their announcement alongside Nvidia of this brand new AI model called Koa.
Julie Bort (1:22)
What's fascinating here is the growing tension between the sprawling generalized models we've all become so used to and these new hyper specialized, highly defensive enterprise models.
SPEAKER_1 (1:35)
Defensive is a great word for it.
Julie Bort (1:36)
Yeah. We are witnessing a fundamental split in what AI is actually supposed to be. I mean, it really depends on who you ask. Totally. You've got the Frontier Labs companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, and they're just racing toward generalized intelligence.
SPEAKER_1 (1:49)
Right. They want to do everything.
Julie Bort (1:50)
Exactly. They're trying to build systems that can, I don't know, solve complex physics equations, or write entire software platforms from scratch.
SPEAKER_1 (1:59)
Which is amazing, but-
Julie Bort (2:00)
But the enterprise world is raising its hand and saying, we just want an AI that can close a sales deal and update a customer record. We wanted to do that without exposing our intellectual property to the public Internet.
SPEAKER_1 (2:11)
Okay. Let's unpack this. Because to really understand why Koa is such a critical pivot point, we have to look at the reality of the enterprise AI landscape right now.
Julie Bort (2:19)
Definitely.
SPEAKER_1 (2:20)
According to the TechCrunch piece, Koa is Salesforce as first reasoning model, and it's built on Nvidia as open weight Nemotron model.
Julie Bort (2:29)
Right. That open weight part is key.
SPEAKER_1 (2:31)
Yeah. For those following the space closely, open weight is a very specific designation. It's actually different from being purely open source. Yeah.
Julie Bort (2:39)
It's an important distinction.
SPEAKER_1 (2:40)
With open weights, you get the pre-trained neural network parameters to run the model locally or on your own private servers, but you don't necessarily get the underlying training code or the raw data it was originally trained on.
Julie Bort (2:55)
Right. They keep the secret sauce.
SPEAKER_1 (2:56)
Exactly. But it gives companies the ability to host the intelligence themselves rather than constantly pinging some external API.
Julie Bort (3:05)
That distinction is everything for corporate IT departments. To understand why that local control is so disruptive, you really have to look at the friction points that currently exist between major corporations and those proprietary Frontier Labs.
SPEAKER_1 (3:19)
Right. The friction is huge right now.
Julie Bort (3:21)
It is. For the last few years, companies have basically been asked to upload their most sensitive files, their internal code bases, their proprietary prompts, directly into these sprawling black box models.
SPEAKER_1 (3:33)
Which is terrifying from a security standpoint.
Julie Bort (3:35)
You're essentially handing over your crown jewels to a third party and just hoping for the best.
SPEAKER_1 (3:40)
Yeah. The article actually mentions companies spending millions of dollars just to integrate with these frontier models.
Julie Bort (3:46)
Oh, easily. Millions.
SPEAKER_1 (3:48)
You have these proprietary labs basically saying, trust us with your most valuable asset, your data, and by the way, pay us a massive premium for the privilege.
Julie Bort (3:59)
Right. Exactly.
SPEAKER_1 (3:59)
I mean, it is an incredibly difficult sell for a Chief Information Security Officer trying to maintain SOC2 compliance, or just protect trade secrets.
Julie Bort (4:08)
Exactly. That vulnerability is precisely what Salesforce is targeting here. I mean, Koa is being presented as the open weight enterprise grade alternative.
SPEAKER_1 (4:19)
It's not trying to do everything.
