S4E5 - Gluttony: The Over-Desire of a Good Thing

The Intentional Fatherhood Podcast

October 6, 2026

Our Seven Deadly Sins series continues with gluttony: the desire to consume beyond what we actually need. That certainly shows up at the table, but also in our scrolling, shopping, and substance consumption.

Justin, we have an incredible announcement for the people. Tell them.

Justin Whitmel Earley (0:02)

Big announcement coming.

Austin, Texas, this November, the second Intentional Fatherhood retreat. We are pumped what dates Brooke.

Brook Mosser (0:11)

November 12th through the 14th, you can join us in Austin, Texas, for a weekend to get away and to be refreshed and transformed as a father. Tell the people what they can expect, Justin.

Justin Whitmel Earley (0:19)

We're gonna have incredible worship. We're gonna have great teaching. We're gonna have a community of dads all coming together, not just to hear a biblical framework on how to live intentionally as a father, but also to be equipped with tons of practical habits and help on how to do that. Most of all, though, this is the kind of thing where you come into a community of dads who are all trying to follow Jesus and the fatherhood together. And let me tell you guys, this will change your life. So we want you there.

Brook Mosser (0:45)

Come out, go get your tickets at intentionalfatherhood.org. You can get all of your tickets there. And please, again, join us. Austin, Texas, November 12th through the 14th. Can't wait to see you there.

Justin Whitmel Earley (1:02)

Welcome to the Intentional Fatherhood Podcast, where we explore what it means to live on purpose as a father and how legacy starts at home. I'm Justin Whitmore Earley.

Brook Mosser (1:12)

And I'm Brook Mosser. We'll be your hosts, and we desire to bring biblical hope and practical hope. Thanks for listening.

Justin Whitmel Earley (1:20)

Hey, I'm just telling you, I'm gonna throw a rock. Why are you telling me that? Well, let's see what you do. I'm telling you, I'm gonna throw a rock. You don't know what they're believing at. Come on. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

Wow. You just want to introduce really bad. All right, fine. Go.

Brook Mosser (1:36)

Go.

Welcome back to the Intentional Fatherhood Podcast. I'm sitting here with my wonderful co-host and friend with a great beard this season. Love the beard. That's true. I'm Justin Whitmore Earley. Here he is.

Justin Whitmel Earley (1:50)

I am actually a little self-conscious. I desperately need to shave. I'm just getting out of control.

Brook Mosser (1:56)

When you got off the plane, I was like, I mean, it feels like you did this on purpose.

Justin Whitmel Earley (2:00)

Well, I sort of did. We were in Colorado last week. I asked the boys and Lauren at dinner one night in June. I was like, should I just keep growing my beard and have a mountain man beard for Colorado? To my surprise, Lauren was like, absolutely. She's the boss. I was like, cool. I love that. The boys were too. Then that was last week and it's just been longer than I thought.

Anyway, every time I get on a Zoom call with a client, I'm a little bit embarrassed.

Brook Mosser (2:24)

You're East Coast, man. You got that proper straight lace. But no, it looks right.

Justin Whitmel Earley (2:29)

But for people who aren't watching and just listening, actually don't care about the beard thing, I just want you to know that I kept my word and threw rock.

Brook really wanted to introduce, I guess, and he threw paper. But at least you trust me. Because I do this to my boys. I'm like, hey, rock, paper, scissors. By the way, I'm going to throw rock and they'll be like, mind game. He's probably going to throw scissors.

Brook Mosser (2:49)

That's exactly what I feel right now.

And my guess was, well, actually, it takes equal amount of trust because I was, you could have easily taken advantage and done scissors and been like, here's what I'm going to do to bait me. It would have been super messed up. You don't think this is super messed up?

Justin Whitmel Earley (3:05)

I did. I have integrity. I threw what I said I was going to throw.

Brook Mosser (3:09)

Well, here we are. We've had a lovely season, season four on Vice.

Justin Whitmel Earley (3:14)

I'm having fun.

Brook Mosser (3:15)

I'm having fun. I'm having great time.

Tell people real quick. Tell them what to come to. Tell them what we're doing. Give a couple updates. This is just business and friends. Please don't skip past this part. We have things that we talk about and want to let you know about that we work hard for you to know about. So just take a second, Justin, give a couple heads up.

Justin Whitmel Earley (3:30)

Really quick, where we are. You're in season four of the Intentional Fatherhood Podcast. Our first three seasons, we set out a map of the tension points of fatherhood. Then we set out a stage in season two of how fatherhood progresses. And now we're in seasons three, four and so on. We're going through each of the tension points of fatherhood. We did work last season. We're doing vices this season. But this is not the only way you engage with our stuff. We would love for you to come to a fatherhood retreat. Look at the website, intentionalfatherhood.org, for the most recent one in a city near you. Come to an in the room if you can. Those are free events you'll see periodically where you get in the room with us. Or just, I think our favorite thing, well, probably my favorite thing is the fatherhood retreat. But the thing that I think honors me the most is when people say, hey, this podcast was so helpful, a friend sent it to me, or I'm listening to it with a group of guys.
