Hello and welcome to Hysteria. I'm Erin Ryan.
Brandy Zadrozny (1:29)
And I'm Brandy Zadrozny.
Erin Ryan (1:30)
Brandy, this week conservative New York Times DEI hire Brett Stevens wrote an entire column about how men, white men in particular, white conservative men in particular, are not celebrated enough in American literature. I'm not sure I agree with that statement, but Brandy, who do you think is America's most under-celebrated white man?
Brandy Zadrozny (1:57)
Ross Douthat.
Erin Ryan (2:03)
Oh, wow. That is a really good. What is it? It's not like a call back, it's a call forward. It's a little teaser. Mine is a little bit more, I think Paul F. Tompkins is America's most under-celebrated white man.
That guy should have his own show. He's so funny. I love that.
Brandy Zadrozny (2:19)
That's so positive. There's not a bit of snark in it.
Erin Ryan (2:21)
No. Perfect. Great. Today, we discuss Patrick Clancy's softball interview on 60 Minutes with the aforementioned Ross Douthat, how Brandy's reporting got her roped into a Russian bot misinformation campaign, and a shadowy network of collegiate sports fans who digitally exploit women. Then Anna Holmes drops by to teach us about The Power of No.
Of course, we wrap up with Sandy Petty. You're listening to Hysteria, the podcast for people who consider themselves amateur forensic bleep analysts. Brandy, I'm going to play you an ad, and I want you to try to glean what is being bleeped in this ad.
Brandy Zadrozny (3:02)
Oh my gosh, okay.
Patrick Clancy (3:04)
Oh, the things you'll hear about me in this campaign.
That when I was in Congress, I d***. And when I'm elected, I'll d*** more. Just know one thing. As senator, I'll have one job. Stand up for New Hampshire every single day.
SPEAKER_3 (3:22)
If you believe anything bad about John, You are full of.
Brandy Zadrozny (3:27)
I'm John Sununu, and I approve this message. She kills me.
Erin Ryan (3:36)
Okay.
Brandy Zadrozny (3:36)
I love that.
Erin Ryan (3:38)
I find it so inscrutable. That's an ad for New Hampshire Republican Senate candidate John Sununu, where there are mysterious bleeps about what he's going to do.
I know that the old lady, probably his mom, said shit, right?
Brandy Zadrozny (3:54)
Sure. And at the third bleep, I swear I heard a hard K.
Talk? Talk?
Erin Ryan (4:02)
I mean, but like, what's a- Bulk, maybe?
Neck?
Stock? No, I don't know. I mean, what is it? What is a swear word? Like, what is- I am so confused. Why?
Brandy Zadrozny (4:20)
And with all that's happening, with our members of Congress and all the scandals, I just don't know if that's- I feel like, and you're just like inviting people to fill in those blanks, not only us, but like literally fill them in.
Erin Ryan (4:32)
Yeah.
Brandy Zadrozny (4:33)
Yeah. Do you don't actually- Do we actually know?
Erin Ryan (4:35)
No, we do. I mean, I think it's meant to be like a curiosity gap type thing and people are supposed to be charmed by the fact, but there are no words short enough that end with K that would express something that people would accuse John Sununu of planning to do in Congress. Nobody is going to be like, that guy is going to fuck when he gets to Congress.
