Today is October 8th. You're listening to New York Rangers News Today, AI-powered coverage of your squad.

All right, let's talk about Alberts Šmits and the impact he's hitting with the New York Rangers. After a rough last season, where they finished last in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers snagged the fifth overall pick in the draft, and they went for Šmits, who's been described as the most pro-ready defenseman. That's a big one for their future. Surprisingly, instead of starting with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the 18-year-old has made the Rangers' opening night roster. He really stood out during training camp and the preseason, and honestly, he wasn't shocked about making the team.

Confidence like that goes a long way, for sure. The Rangers are off to a solid start with a 4-1 record, and amidst his contributions are making a difference. His high hockey IQ and understanding of the game are showing, especially after his time in the Finnish Hockey League and international play. That kind of experience is huge for a rookie coming into the NHL. Coach Mike Sullivan has been focused on balancing the lineup, and Mitz is a part of it. He's teamed up with Braden Schneider on the third defensive pairing, which is strengthening the team's overall defense. Sullivan's happy with their chemistry, noting it's only going to improve from here, and that's promising. So there's definitely a lot to be excited about with Mitz.

He's gaining confidence with every game, and if he keeps trending in the right direction, he could be a key player for the Rangers as the season unfolds. Let's see how he continues to develop.
