On September 17th, the Washington Nationals are building something special, and it's not just on the big league field. Their farm system is loaded with talent, with names like Eli Willits, Devin Fitzgerald, and Jarlyn Susana, all showing serious promise. They've got a deep pool of high upside players who could be the next wave of stars for the franchise. Among all these rising prospects, one player really stood out this past season. According to MLB Pipeline, that distinction goes to infielder Ronny Cruz. He was named the Nationals Breakout Prospect of the Year, and for good reason.

Cruz kicked off the season on fire, hitting for average and power, while also showing off his speed. This hot start earned him a promotion to a higher level. However, he faced some challenges there, with his aggressive swing leading to more strikeouts than usual, which raised some questions about his development. But don't count him out. Cruz finished the season strong, significantly reducing his strikeouts, and improving his slugging percentage in his final games.

This late surge has kept him on MLB Pipeline's radar, who still see him as a top prospect with significant potential, especially with his blend of power and speed. Acquired in a trade last year, Cruz was initially seen as more of a long-term project, not highly ranked within the organization. His performance this year, coming from relative obscurity, makes him a really exciting story and a key piece of National's rebuilding efforts.
