Okay, so the New York Rangers opened their season last night, and it didn't go as planned. They suffered a three nothing loss to the Boston Bruins in what was coach Mike Sullivan's 1000th game behind the bench. Not even a stellar performance by goalie Igor Shesterkin could save them from a shutout. Definitely not the start they wanted. The Bruins took control most of the night, but finally broke the scoreless tie with just under four minutes left in the third. Fraser Minten scored first and then newcomer. JJ. Peterka quickly followed it up, netting his first goal with Boston.
That kind of turnaround at the end? That's got a sting for the Rangers fans. One bright spot was the debut of first round draft pick Alberts Smits. He became the first 18 year old defenseman to play for the Rangers on opening night. He did have a few shaky moments, finishing the game with a minus one rating, but the experience will definitely help him grow.
Shesterkin faced some real pressure, saving several tough shots throughout the game, especially in the second period when the Bruins ramped up their offensive play. It's a tough spot to be in when your goalie is the only one keeping the score close. Looking ahead, the Rangers are back at it on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning for their home opener. They'll really need to shake off this loss and come out strong at Madison Square Garden.
