It's September 13th. This is New York Rangers News Today. Powered by AI. Your team, your update. The New York Rangers kicked off their rookie series against the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-2 loss. It was the first game for these young players, and honestly, the play was a bit rough around the edges.
One of the vets, Drew Fortescue, who played nine games with the Rangers last season, said it best, shit's gonna happen in the first game. They only had one full practice and a morning skate to get ready, so that's understandable. Liam Greentree, a top prospect for the Rangers, echoed that sentiment. He mentioned that there's a bit of a summer hockey aspect to it, with guys playing a little too relaxed. Greentree, though, looked sharp. He's been training with some of the main team players and showed it, landing some big hits, creating chances, and even getting an assist on a power play goal.
Greentree came over from the Los Angeles Kings in a trade for Artemi Panarin. He was a first round pick and is now considered the second best prospect in the Rangers system.
He's a big kid who's been putting up serious numbers in junior hockey for the past few seasons, scoring at least 36 goals every year. He played on the top line, killed penalties, and was part of the main power play union. Alberts Smits, another highly touted prospect in a top draft pick, also saw a lot of ice time. He was on the ice for all five goals scored in the game and picked up a couple of assists himself, including one on the power play. The Rangers wrap up their rookie series against the Flyers tomorrow afternoon. It'll be interesting to see if these young guys can tighten things up and bring that competitiveness up as they get more time together on the ice.
