Today is September 28th. Okay, big news out of New York with the Rangers and their final roster cuts ahead of the upcoming season.
They took a risk by placing goalie Dylan Garand and forward Taylor Raddysh on waivers to hit that 23-player roster limit by today's deadline. Good news for the team, though. Both guys cleared waivers and will stick around. Now, they definitely dodged a bullet here. The only player claimed from these cuts was goalie Clay Stevenson, who went to the Winnipeg Jets.
If Stevenson wasn't picked, Garand could have been the one on the move, and that would have really hurt their goaltending depth. With Spencer Martin sitting third on the depth chart behind Junas Korpisalo and Igor Shesterkin, they need Garand as insurance. Garand will keep developing with the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he should be the number one option. He had a solid NHL debut toward the end of last season, going 2-0-1 with a crazy good save percentage of .948. Didn't quite win over the higher ups for that number two spot yet, but he has all the potential. Raddysh adds some much needed experience to the AHL squad.
He played 68 games last season, chipping in 9 goals and 10 assists, not to mention a plus-minus of plus-five, which was tied for the best on the team.
With some fresh talent around him, he could really help get the Wolf Pack back on track. In the end, the Rangers lost only defenseman William Trudeau to the Nashville Predators. Everyone else, including rookie Alberts Smits and defenseman Scott Morrow, made the cut for opening night. So, things are looking promising as they gear up for the season ahead.
