So, the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement kicked in this week, and before that, teams were busy signing players. The Rangers, for instance, brought in some familiar faces, including former player Jonathan Quick. This move is seen by some as an effort to inject some much-needed veteran leadership and culture into the team. Quick, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and a likely Hall of Famer, wasn't your typical goalie. He played a bit unconventionally, kind of like Tim Thomas or Dominic Hasek, but he was incredibly effective. His unorthodox style, while sometimes flashy, led to a lot of success. The thinking is that Quick's role might be more about mentorship and overseeing the goaltending situation, rather than getting hands-on with every technical aspect. This approach makes sense, especially considering his championship experience and the potential impact he could have on younger players.

This hiring by General Manager Chris Drury is a bit of a shift from his usual strategy. It suggests a new direction for the team, one that values the experience and insight of former players who bend through the grind and come out on top. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the Rangers. Bringing in guys like Quick could be a game changer for the locker room dynamics and overall performance as they navigate the new season under the updated CBA.
