The day's biggest stories, the people behind the headlines, the conversations you won't hear anywhere else.
I'm Christy Strawser. You're listening to Audacy's On Deadline. Let's talk about age and changing mores around it, starting with Vanita and Jordana in Minneapolis.
Tara Sirvashus (0:16)
Can I be so rude and ask how old you are?
SPEAKER_3 (0:19)
Of course, I talk about it all the time, 58
Tara Sirvashus (0:21)
Okay, good.
SPEAKER_3 (0:21)
I'm 54
Steve (0:22)
Yeah.
Tommy Tucker (0:23)
Hilary Swank is 52
Tara Sirvashus (0:25)
She's pregnant with her third child.
Steve (0:26)
Oh, my goodness.
Tara Sirvashus (0:28)
Oh, my goodness. When I heard that this morning, I was like, God help this woman. I mean, this is a choice. She's married. She has two other kids. This is her third child.
SPEAKER_3 (0:36)
She has a loving partner.
Tara Sirvashus (0:39)
But if I had to nurse or chase around an infant, I mean, I would leave.
I would run away. I would abandon that child.
SPEAKER_3 (0:49)
I'm sorry.
Tara Sirvashus (0:50)
Well, you didn't like having little kids when you were younger.
SPEAKER_3 (0:52)
I hated them.
Tommy Tucker (0:53)
I love having little kids.
Bellen Edwards (0:55)
I hate little kids. I hated mine.
Steve (0:57)
They are menaces to society.
Tara Sirvashus (1:00)
Oh, Jordana, come on.
Steve (1:01)
And the only reason they survive is because they're cute. Right?
Tara Sirvashus (1:05)
Like puppies, you pee all over. Oh, you're lucky you're cute, because otherwise, I'll throw you off the balcony. So again, is 52 years old for a woman to have a baby?
Steve (1:13)
Well, what about a man?
Tara Sirvashus (1:15)
Again, this is our conversation.
Christy Strawser (1:18)
Whether or not you have a young child when you're eligible, it's time for open enrollment in Medicare. Here's what you need to know from Tommy Tucker in New Orleans.
Tommy Tucker (1:27)
And Dr. B joins us now, our friend, good to see you in person, joins us from People's Health to help explain Medicare, Medicare Advantage in your enrollment options. What is Medicare?
SPEAKER_3 (1:37)
Yeah, so this gets really confusing, so we'll try to pare it down. So Medicare is a federal health insurance program, and it's typically for people that are age 65 and older. Medicare is individual health insurance, and what that means is unlike an employer plan, it's not going to cover your spouse or any dependents that you might have.
Another difference is that Medicare is a little complex, but it's broken up into four different parts that are designated by letters A, B, C and D.
Tommy Tucker (2:08)
All right, let's jump in, part A.
SPEAKER_3 (2:10)
Yeah, so part A, I always think of part A as facility coverage, and what I mean by that is it's the care that you get in a hospital or a skilled nursing facility. And it does also cover hospice care and some home health services right in your home.
Tommy Tucker (2:27)
And it's a part A facility coverage. What about part B?
SPEAKER_3 (2:30)
So B is actually outpatient coverage or the actual medical insurance that's going to cover things like doctor's visits, it's going to cover things in an outpatient surgery center. What's really important about this coverage is that it covers preventative services like flu shots, which everybody should be getting right now, cancer screenings, and then all those diagnostic tests like x-rays, mammograms in particular, also big month this month to do that. And then your durable medical equipment or DME, that's things like wheelchairs and hospitals and rolling walkers that you may need to help you out.
Tommy Tucker (3:07)
What about Medicare part C?
SPEAKER_3 (3:09)
Yeah, so part C is actually Medicare Advantage Plan. So that's another option. While original Medicare is offered by the federal government, the Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies, such as People's Health. And these plans have to follow all the same Medicare rules. And they do cover all the same services that original Medicare covers.
Tommy Tucker (3:32)
If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare?
SPEAKER_3 (3:35)
Absolutely, absolutely. You still have Medicare, you still have all the rights and protections that come with Medicare. But your Medicare Advantage Plan is providing that coverage and all of the coordination and services. So at the doctor's office, you're going to show your Medicare Advantage card, not your red, white and blue card.
Tommy Tucker (3:53)
So we've been through A, B and C. What about D?
SPEAKER_3 (3:55)
D is easy to remember because D stands for drugs.
And so this is your prescription drug coverage. These are medications that you pick up at a pharmacy. And the important thing on this is remember, original Medicare is only parts A and B. It does not include drug coverage. You have to buy that separately, or you can sometimes get it combined with a Medicare Advantage plan.
