Advisory Committee for the FDA voted to ease restrictions on a popular but unregulated peptide. The group will vote today on the regulation surrounding a few other peptides as well. They have really surged in popularity across this wellness industry, despite some doctors expressing their skepticism about the safety and efficacy of peptides. A few have actually undergone thorough clinical trials. Yet some influencers and celebrities are still marketing them as effective treatments for a range of things, including weight loss, immunity and skin health.

Yeah, that was NBC News. The FDA voted by committee to ease restrictions on BPC 157 I don't know if you're familiar with that. That is a very popular peptide amongst influencers who market peptides as an effective treatment for weight loss and immunity and skin health. Good to be with you today. I'm Drew Mariani. Thanks for joining me. You know, it's fascinating. I ended up having this injury, and one of my colleagues here was telling me exactly about that. And he says, you got to go see this guy. You got to check him out. It will certainly, he'll certainly be able to help you, you know? And then I started to hear a lot about peptides. And I don't know if you've heard about peptides, if you've been up to speed on this stuff at all. Dr. Sean O'Mara is going to be stopping by. We're going to get his take on this.
And again, we've talked about all sorts of stuff. But what if, and this is fascinating, I don't know a lot about it, I told Dr. O'Mara that before we came on the air.
I was thinking, what if the next medical breakthrough isn't a bigger, more complicated drug, but what if it's a smaller one? And what if peptides can accelerate healing? And I actually spoke to a physician earlier about this, and he says, oh yeah, we use some of these in our practices. I mean, they're very effective.
They're everywhere right now on social media. If you go to a longevity clinic, or you're looking into that, or fitness circles, maybe you're taking them right now yourself, even in doctors' offices, increasingly in your doctors' office, and people claim that it is changing their lives. Now, there are others that say, come on, this is all hype, it's the next big craze, slow down, really, peptides? So the FDA is wrestling with how these compounds should be regulated. So I thought today, for you, I would lay out what are peptides?
Could they lower the cost of medicine? Could they improve access to maybe life-saving treatment? Could they usher in a new era of health care for you? Are we getting ahead of the science? Is there a danger to these things? How do you separate hope from hype? That's the big question. Joining me today to do that, though, is our regular contributor, Dr. Sean O'Mara. He joins me just about the first Wednesday of every month. We're getting him a little bit earlier this week. And he's an executive health physician in private practice in Minneapolis. And he made a lot of news because he's been dealing with the president's cabinet. So teach me and teach all of us. I mean, peptides are relatively new to me, and I'm always open to this type of stuff. I mean, you've changed my attitude with the microbiome and weight loss. I mean, it's a lot of things you've said have been on point. So I thought, what a perfect person to talk to today. What is a peptide? How many different kinds are they? What do they do?
Give us the 101

Okay, so I'll try to simplify it because it's such a hot topic right now that intimidates people, so I thought I'd just break it down a little bit. So basically, our bodies are made up of protein tissue, and protein really is the fundamental blocks of it, or amino acids. And there's about 20 of them or so, not that complicated to our bodies, animals, and humans, and believe it or not, also about the same for plants. The big difference is how these amino acids gets combined. It's the combination of them that has effect on our physiology and constitutes what tissue does. So the particular composition is really important. So let's break down amino acids or figure out what do amino acids do with peptides. So when you combine two or more amino acids, you get a peptide. It's just that simple. Okay. So when you hear peptide, it's just a combination of a particular combination of amino acids. So you can have a dipeptide, which is two, you can have a tripeptide, which is three. But generally, you just lump it all together and you hear about peptides. But in the research realm and as positions, we might pay a little bit more attention to that. But that's all really as this combination, a particular combination of amino acids together. And you can have large combinations of these things. Now, why is this so important?
