It's Monday, the 5th of October. Welcome to the PDB Afternoon Bulletin. I'm Mike Baker, your eyes and ears on the world stage. All right, let's get briefed. First up, on this morning's PDB, we highlighted a new offensive by the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces against the Iranian-backed Houthis. At the time, it wasn't clear if this would be a limited operation to push back the Houthis from the Bab al-Mandeb Strait or potentially something larger. Now, it appears to be something larger, a Saudi-backed campaign to retake Sana'a, that's the capital, and break Houthi control of Yemen. Later in the show, the US is monitoring a mysterious death and now quarantined situation, oh, here we go again, involving a Russian anti-plague laboratory, as questions grow over what happened inside the facility. That is exactly what 2026 needed, another pandemic scare. But first, today's afternoon spotlight. This morning, we told you Saudi-backed forces were preparing to push the Houthis away from the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. That's the narrow waterway, of course, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and one of the world's most important shipping routes.
Well, it's now clear the operation is much bigger than that. Yemen's internationally recognized government says it's launched what it's describing as a full-scale military campaign aimed at retaking the capital Sana'a and breaking Houthi control of the capital. The operation is being called the Dawn of Yemen, and Saudi Arabia is providing substantial air support as government forces open multiple fronts against the Iranian-backed Houthis. The Saudi-led coalition says roughly 100 fighter jets took part in the opening phase of the operation, striking more than 300 Houthi targets. Saudi aircraft are also reportedly providing round-the-clock air cover for Yemeni government forces advancing on the ground. One of the main battlefields remains Yemen's western coast. Government forces say they've taken large parts of the Dubaab district, it's a stretch of Yemen's southwestern coast, overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. They also claim to have captured the local airport and cut roads connecting Houthi positions farther north toward Moqa. That would help loosen the Houthi's grip around the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi says the ultimate objective is to retake Sana'a and restore government authority across the country. In other words, it's no longer simply an attempt to reverse the Houthi's recent gains along the coast. As you might expect, the Iranian-backed Houthis are fighting back. They've continued pressing government positions around Taiz, where they have reportedly taken territory and threatened important supply routes into the city. So while Saudi-backed forces appear to be making gains in the West, this is not shaping up as an easy or one-sided campaign.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, is committing major military resources to the fight. Riyadh had spent years trying to reduce its direct involvement in Yemen's civil war.
Now, Saudi aircraft are once again conducting large-scale strikes while the kingdom backs a ground offensive aimed at the Houthi Hilt capital. And there's another question hanging over all of this. How far Saudi Arabia's new regional partners are prepared to go?
Pakistan has already reportedly sent military equipment to Yemen, including air defense systems, drones, counter drone equipment and light artillery. Pakistani advisers have also reportedly been working alongside Saudi personnel supporting Yemeni forces.
Turkey has supplied military equipment as well. But so far, there's no indication that Pakistani or Turkish forces are directly participating in combat operations inside Yemen.
Now, that could become increasingly important because senior officials from all three countries are meeting in Riyadh under the new defense agreement linking Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey. The talks are taking place as the Yemeni offensive is unfolding, meaning this new security partnership is receiving a major test almost immediately.
Saudi Arabia has not publicly invoked any collective defense provision, and neither Pakistan nor Turkey has announced plans to join the fight.
All right, coming up next, a young Russian researcher is dead. Dozens have reportedly been quarantined, and Washington is now trying to determine what happened inside a Russian plague research lab. I'll be right back.
