OpenAI has been sued again, this time over ChatGPT health advice that almost killed a pastor. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is expected to crash into the moon this August. And the US outlined its $5 billion Genesis Mission to boost science with AI.
It's Thursday, July 23rd. And here's a quick look at some of the news happening in the sphere of tech this morning from Engadget.
A pastor has sued OpenAI after alleging the software gave him extremely dangerous medical recommendations. That's according to a report by the New York Times. This reportedly led to delayed care to treat a serious pulmonary embolism, as ChatGPT allegedly told Scott Winters that the symptoms he described were, quote, not something dangerous. It even reportedly drew on his religious beliefs, telling him that God did not design your body to endlessly fail.
The suit accuses OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of negligence and the unauthorized practice of medicine. It points to multiple instances in which the Chatbot offered up its own diagnoses and treatment plans. The Chatbot also allegedly told Winters to ignore pleas from friends and family to seek actual medical care. Winters alleges that he told the Chatbot that the people in my church think I'm crazy for not going to the hospital. The suit says the Chatbot responded by saying, Most people, including well-meaning church members, simply don't understand.
Winters is seeking financial damages from OpenAI, but is also asking the court to stop ChatGPT Health from operating until independent evaluators determine that it's safe to use. This is a platform that encourages users to upload health documents to the Chatbot. Finally, the lawsuit is demanding stronger guardrails to prevent ChatGPT from answering questions about specific medical treatments and diagnoses. ChatGPT is supposed to already have guardrails in place for this type of thing, but the suit says they did not work reliably in this case. Winters survived the ordeal, but according to the lawsuit, will face years of intensive physical and psychological recovery.
On August 5th, the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket is expected to crash into the moon near the Einstein Crater, and it will likely be observable from certain locations on Earth using ground-based telescopes. It was Bill Gray, the creator of the Project Pluto Desktop Planetary Program, who first determined that the rocket will hit the moon next month after feeding data into his program to predict the rocket's orbit and future path. The upper stage that will be crashing into the lunar surface came from SpaceX's Firefly Blue Ghost mission, which launched on January 15th of last year. Falcon 9 carried Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Lunar Lander to space that flight, along with the Japanese company I-Space's Hakuto-R Lunar Lander. Fisorg explains that after the rocket deployed the landers, it ran out of fuel and could not head back down to Earth. It's been drifting in space ever since. The upper stage is roughly 39 feet long and 13 feet wide, with a weight of around 4,000 kilograms. It will slam into the moon at a speed of 5,400 miles per hour. According to a paper written by Gray and his colleagues, who used a physics simulator to analyze data, the upper stage will not really have that big of an impact. That's because even though it's larger than most natural lunar impactors, it's a hollow shell and is moving much more slowly. Regardless, it's a chance for astronomers to observe an artificial impact in real time. They can use this chance to study how dust and plumes move from impact events on the moon, as well as to look into the hazards of artificial space debris impacts. Gray and the team said the impact will be most visible in locations in complete darkness at the time of the event, meaning it will be most observable in South America and low to mid-latitude North America. The higher the moon is at the time of impact, the higher the chances of seeing the crash, which means astronomers in North America, away from the West Coast, are most likely to witness it.
The White House and the Department of Energy shared some details this week about the types of research the Genesis Mission will undertake. The Genesis Mission was created via executive order last November with the broadly stated goal of using artificial intelligence to further scientific discoveries. The Department of Energy was named as a main leader of the endeavor, but at least 15 federal agencies are now involved. More than $5 billion has been committed to the Genesis Mission across those departments. Participants will work toward accomplishing national science and technology challenges, making contributions in the form of research awards, funding opportunities, specialized scientific data sets and research facilities. The challenges cover topics in health care like finding the root causes of chronic disease, energy infrastructure like scaling the grid to power the American economy, and national defense like early detection and attribution of biological threats. There's also a set of challenges toward improving the US industries for microelectronics, biology and weapons. Finally, there's a general category of discovery challenges that cover areas such as space and astronomy, autonomous laboratories, quantum computing, materials creation and modeling living systems. There will also be corporate partners. Microsoft has created a program office called Scientific Partnership Advancing Research and Knowledge, or SPARC, for coordinating the research efforts. It's also backing the Genesis Mission in the form of cloud computing and AI credits.
