Hello and welcome back to Once Upon A Time, a Matchroom Boxing original audio docu-series focusing on Katie Taylor's final fight at Croke Park in Dublin on September the 5th, live on DAZN.
In our penultimate episode today, we're talking to a couple of Katie's former opponents. Joining us to describe what it's like to share a ring with Katie and reflect on their battles down the years are Natasha Jonas and Delfine Persoon, who both boxed Katie more than once. After taking up boxing in 2005, Jonas won five ABA championships and was later the first female fighter to represent Team GB. She first crossed paths with Katie in the ring at Ant Bulgaria in 2011, which went in favour of the Irish star 6'3. Jonas made history in May 2012 when she became the first ever female British boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games, a tournament she would later face Katie in once again on the grandest stage of the amateur game. The pair would later reunite in the professional game nine years on for the undisputed 135-pound crown. Miss GB takes us through those dust-ups on a little trip down memory lane and also describes the first time she come across Katie and another modern-day great.

When I just got on to the England kind of set up, I remember the lads had a Europeans in Liverpool and Danny Price said to me, right, does this lad, his names, does this lad, you've got to watch him.
He's on at this time, whatever, whatever. I came and I watched him and he was absolutely brilliant. But what I did notice was that all the athletes came to watch. Who was the lad? Lemachenko. When I went to my first ever international, everyone was like, oh, there's this girl, you've got to watch her, you've got to watch her. Who's the girl? It's Katie Taylor.
Everyone from every different country, all over the world, every time she fought, would come and stop and watch the coaches, the athletes, the refs, the judges, everyone was in order.
Scott Hamilton (3:45)
Firstly, that must be pretty cool for yourself to see someone like Lomachenko up close and personal as a big fan.
Natasha Jonas (3:50)
That was before he was, he was.
Scott Hamilton (3:52)
So, Katie Taylor, semi-final of the tournament in Bulgaria, she beat you 6-3. How did that fight play out from your memory in talking, what, 15 years ago?
Natasha Jonas (4:01)
Round one, she was 2-0 up. Round three, round two, she was 3-0 up.
And then, so that meant that I actually won the last two rounds, which was always kind of a trait in my boxing, is that I'd have a slow start and get better. So, yeah, when it came to the Olympics, obviously, she was, we identified all the threats. And obviously, Katie was the biggest threat for the 60-kilo category that I was in. Otja gave the Brazilian Queen, Queen Underwood of USA as well. So, yeah, they was all identified as the biggest threats to me at the time. And I remember the coaches saying, if you start like you finished the last time you fought her, it'll be a closer fight. So, that was kind of the mindset going into the Olympic Fighters. I had to get a good start.
