Okay, our friends, so today we are reading a story for you. For any of you out there who have grandparents, if you have a grandma or a grandpa, raise your hand.
SPEAKER_3 (0:20)
Okay, so this story is for you. Did you know that they, well, they've been alive a lot longer than you have, right?
Lisa Bueno (0:28)
But did you know that they've done stuff, they've done stuff with their lives that you don't know about?
Philip (0:35)
Like, probably crossing the street.
Lisa Bueno (0:38)
Street?
SPEAKER_5 (0:38)
Yeah.
Philip (0:39)
The sea.
SPEAKER_5 (0:40)
Oh, the sea.
SPEAKER_6 (0:41)
Yeah, well, they might do that as well.
Lisa Bueno (0:43)
Some of them are world travelers, but you never know. And sometimes when we look at an old person, we go, oh, they smell weird and they look crusty and I don't want to go near them.
SPEAKER_3 (0:56)
But guess what?
Lisa Bueno (0:58)
They were once, just like you, they were once young and wild and free and they have stories to share. Like for example, the story we're going to read today, it's called Old Man of the Sea.
This story was written by Stella Elia and Weberson Santiago.
SPEAKER_3 (1:21)
And I can't wait to read it with you. So buckle up, you guys.
Lisa Bueno (1:24)
Today's story is read by Mommy and...
Philip (1:27)
Philip.
Lisa Bueno (1:29)
The guy.
SPEAKER_3 (1:29)
You ready, Philip?
Lisa Bueno (1:31)
Okay, here we go. Every Sunday, Grandpa would wait for me in his room and I would take my place at the foot of the bed. There were days when Grandpa wanted to talk. And days when we would sit in silence.
One day, Grandpa held my hand and pulled me closer.
SPEAKER_5 (1:52)
Do you see my face? He asked me, every line on my skin tells the story of my life.
Lisa Bueno (2:04)
What? What do you think that means?
From that day on, Grandpa told me stories of the time he spent at sea. He was a great sailor, my grandpa. Onboard his ship, he studied maps and compasses and navigated the oceans by the stars and the sky. And whenever he began one of his tales, he would look at me in a way that embarrassed me a little.
SPEAKER_5 (2:33)
All aboard!
SPEAKER_6 (2:35)
He would yell.
Lisa Bueno (2:38)
Seems like this grandpa has a big personality.
Grandpa spent many months at sea, but it was on land that he met his first love, Europe. And together they wandered through fairy tale castles and ate picnics in groves of olive trees. Grandpa loved Europe, but he could hear the ocean calling, and he filled his luggage with stories and returned to the sea.
SPEAKER_3 (3:10)
Do you know what Europe is?
SPEAKER_1 (3:12)
Yes.
SPEAKER_3 (3:13)
What is it?
SPEAKER_1 (3:14)
A continent.
SPEAKER_3 (3:15)
A continent full of countries. Can you name maybe three different countries you would find in Europe?
SPEAKER_1 (3:22)
Yeah. Go ahead. Italy. Uh-huh.
France.
Philip (3:26)
Spain. Very good. I can go farther.
Lisa Bueno (3:28)
You can? Tell me a few more.
Philip (3:33)
Um, a few more?
Lisa Bueno (3:34)
Yeah.
Philip (3:35)
Okay.
Luxembourg. Luxembourg.
SPEAKER_6 (3:41)
Very good.
Philip (3:44)
Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein. Yeah.
SPEAKER_1 (3:46)
Switzerland. Switzerland.
Philip (3:48)
Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany.
Lisa Bueno (3:52)
Wow.
SPEAKER_3 (3:53)
That's quite a few that you've just rattled off there.
Lisa Bueno (3:56)
Well done.
SPEAKER_3 (3:56)
I think we've got Eastern Europe set. Well done.
Lisa Bueno (4:03)
And I think that's what...
Philip (4:04)
Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Estonia, Poland, Latvia, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania.
SPEAKER_3 (4:15)
Now we've got Eastern Europe covered.
Lisa Bueno (4:17)
Excellent.
SPEAKER_3 (4:18)
How are you going to do with Southern Europe?
Philip (4:22)
Yeah, I forgot that one.
SPEAKER_3 (4:23)
Starts at the very end over here. In the pictures, friends, we can see this is Portugal over here.
Philip (4:31)
Portugal, Spain, Dora, Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey and Malta.
And Kosovo. Oh wow. I can't forget Kosovo.
SPEAKER_5 (4:53)
You're absolutely correct.
SPEAKER_3 (4:54)
So now we've covered... Well done. Okay, so the only thing you're missing is the British Isles.
SPEAKER_5 (5:00)
So I'm...
Philip (5:01)
In Northern Europe.
SPEAKER_3 (5:02)
In Northern Europe. That's true.
Philip (5:05)
Copenhagen, Oslo...
SPEAKER_3 (5:08)
Yeah, you're giving me the capitals and the names of the countries. Well done.
Philip (5:11)
Copenhagen, Denmark, Oslo, Norway, Reykjavik, Iceland, Kastarki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. Wow.
SPEAKER_3 (5:19)
And there you have it, friends. Philip's first love is also Europe.
