Hey everyone, welcome back to the AI Hardware Show. I'm your host, Skyler Monroe. And if you're into the silicon and semiconductors, powering the AI revolution, you are absolutely in the right place. Huge thank you to our sponsors today, Ada, helping businesses integrate AI into their workflows seamlessly. Ago Consulting pronounced Ago your go-to for silicon development consulting from AI to So, and Zen Semiconductor, building the processors and AI fabric behind modern data centers, with incredible ventures like their Sierra RISC-V CPUs and Loom AI fabric, plus Ada for deploying AI at scale. Today we've got a packed show, we're talking about H100 and H200 GPS, showing up in some unexpected places, Nvidia making a big pivot towards CPUs for agentic AI, a fascinating software story, about competing with specialized AI hardware using good old Nvidia GPS, an open-source autonomous driving chip initiative out of Japan and JPorgan throwing a bit of cold water on the AI chip rally. Let's get into it. Alright, first story, and this one's a bit of an eyebrow-raiser. There's a wholesale GPU supplier based in Dubai that's announced bulk availability of Nvidia H100 and H200 chips specifically targeting buyers in Hong Kong. Now on the surface, that might sound like just another supply chain story, but let's dig into why this is actually pretty significant and what it tells us about the global AI hardware landscape right now. So first, let's just quickly set the stage on what these chips actually are, in case you're newer to the show.
The H100 and H200 are Nvidia's flagship data center GPOs. These are the workhorses of AI training and inference. We're talking about chips built on Nvidia's Hopper architecture. The H100 packs 80 gigabytes of HBM3 memory, delivers insane memory bandwidth, and the H200 bumps that up to 141 gigabytes of HBM3e. These things are not cheap. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars per unit at retail, and demand has been absolutely through the roof. Now, here's where the geopolitics come in, and you really can't tell this story without them. The US government has had export controls in place that restrict the sale of high-end AI chips to certain regions. China being the big one.
Nvidia actually had to create modified versions of their chips, like the H800, specifically for the Chinese market to comply with those restrictions. Hong Kong, while technically a special administrative region, has been increasingly subject to the same scrutiny as mainland China under these export rules. So when you see a supplier in Dubai advertising bulk H100 and H200 availability, specifically to Hong Kong buyers, that raises some serious questions. Dubai has emerged as kind of a gray market hub for high-end computing hardware. It sits outside the direct reach of US export enforcement in ways that make it an attractive transshipment point. Think of it like this. If there's a dam blocking water flow in one direction, water will find a way around it. Chips are doing the same thing right now, and this matters enormously for the AI hardware industry for a few reasons. One, it signals that demand for top-tier Nvidia silicon remains absolutely intense, even at a premium, even through non-standard channels. Two, it puts pressure on Nvidia and US regulators to either tighten enforcement or rethink how export controls are structured.
And three, it creates real business risk for anyone in that supply chain. Companies buying chips through unofficial channels could face legal consequences, and the chips themselves may not come with proper warranties or support. From a hardware perspective, the fact that buyers are going through all of this effort and cost just to get their hands on H100s and H200s tells you everything you need to know about how dominant Nvidia's ecosystem is right now. The CUDA software stack, the NVLink interconnects the mature tooling it's not just about raw compute, it's about the entire ecosystem that comes with those chips. Competitors are working hard to close that gap, but clearly the market is still voting with its wallet for Nvidia silicon, even when it's complicated to get. This story is also a good reminder that AI hardware isn't just a technology story, it's a geopolitical one. The next few years of chip availability are going to be shaped as much by trade policy as by engineering. Keep your eyes on this space. All right, moving on to story two, and this one really got my attention because it represents what I think is a meaningful strategic shift from Nvidia. The headline is that Nvidia has shipped hundreds of thousands of grace standalone servers.
The bigger story here is that Nvidia is pivoting its messaging. CPUs are now taking center stage in how they talk about agentic AI data centers. Okay, so let's unpack this. For most people, when you think Nvidia, you think GPUs, graphics processing units. That's been their identity for decades, from gaming to deep learning. Nvidia equals GPU, the grace CPU is different. It's an ARM-based processor that Nvidia has been developing, and it was initially positioned as a companion to their GPUs in the Grace Hopper Superchip, essentially a CPU and GPU fused together on the same package for maximum bandwidth. But now Nvidia is talking about grace as a standalone product, shipping it in servers without a GPU attached. Hundreds of thousands of units. That's not a pilot program, that's a real product line. And the reason why gets into something really interesting about where AI workloads are heading. The buzz phrase here is EGENTIC AI.
