Shannon Sharpe (0:00)

Welcome to the show, Shay. Hey, she probably, are you on mute?

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (0:05)

Can you hear me?

Shannon Sharpe (0:05)

Oh, okay. We got the ultimate champion, double gold medal, with a winning time of 1062 in the 100 meters, 2147 in the 200 meters, into a negative 0.6 headwind.

Chad Johnson (0:17)

Yeah.

Shannon Sharpe (0:18)

If you flip that around, get the 0.06 out of back, that's 21, that's 23, 21

I don't know, we might be talking about the world record, MJ. What's going on?

Chad Johnson (0:31)

Welcome to the show.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (0:32)

How's it going?

Shannon Sharpe (0:34)

I'm doing great. How surprised were you that you ran that fast? I don't think you're really shocked that you won the race, but I'm thinking you were shocked with how fast you ran the race.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (0:45)

No, definitely. I was like, once I crossed the line and I saw that time, I was like, oh, wow. Didn't I think that was going to happen that day?

Shannon Sharpe (0:58)

But look, and we talked about this last year at the World Championship, when you ran that 1061 and you keep getting the right people in the race, but you keep getting the wrong conditions for the damn race. At some point in time, we're going to have to get a plus tailwind to give us a little boost, because there's no question in my mind. I think it was negative six last time you ran the 1061 You get a plus zero six, that's 1050, that might be even 10 Who knows? World record, because we talked about this, MJ. I said, if you get the St. Lucian, you get Julian Alfred, you get Shaqari, you get Clayton, who has a great start, that's going to pull you out of the blocks with her. And you got Julian Alfred, who's at last 50 meters, she's a beast, she coming. You know she's coming, everybody else knows she coming.

We got world record potential. What's going on with the conditions? Why we can't get favorable conditions?

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (1:50)

I don't know, maybe it's being set up for like the right, at the right time or something, I don't know.

Shannon Sharpe (1:58)

Because you look at, what was the couple of, what was that in Brussels? That Maasai ran the 12.09 in the Harnels?

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (2:05)

Yeah, in the Harnels.

Shannon Sharpe (2:08)

Okay, yeah. And I was like, man, I ain't gonna lie Melissa, cause you had lost 100 meter race in over a year. And then, and then Julian nipped you at the line. And I was thinking to myself, I said, I don't believe Julian can beat her again. I said, I don't know what happened, because normally once you get out the block, I've never seen you get chased down. Now you've had some slow starts, but now you are, you are, you are a good enough, you're a great starter.

Tia Clayton, she on another level. I'm like, damn, if somebody pulling out the blocks, what's going on with that?

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (2:41)

Yeah. No, it was like, it was one of those where you kind of look at it and it's like, okay, I needed to lose the race in a sense, because not that I was getting comfortable or anything, but it really just explode, it exposed some things that I needed to clean up within my own race. So it was like, better it happened now in Zurich, where there's not a lot on the line versus it happened in two weeks later in Budapest. So that was probably the first race that I had, that I had not came in first and I actually had a big smile across my face after the race was over. Because it was like, when you really look at it, I didn't lose by, I lost by a couple of thousands of a second. So I'm like, oh, don't even worry about it.

Shannon Sharpe (3:26)

Oh, you're like, yeah, she over there. You know, she happy, she celebrate. Say, I got something for you. We're not 150,000 on the line. You're not gonna be, cause you looking at it like, 10 yards past the finish line, there's a check for $150,000.

And it got Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, it got my name on it.

Chad Johnson (3:46)

Hello.

Shannon Sharpe (3:46)

Ain't nobody gonna be reaching that check out.

Chad Johnson (3:49)

You know what, MJ, I also think about, when you cross the line, when you've run these times and you cross the line and it surprises you once you see what the time is. Do you think you're surprised because of the field that you're running against and you run those times? Or do you think your training regimen was a little different leading up to those races where you ran those excellent times?
