How about this? Todd Monken says, he still sees Deshaun Watson as a young player, and would love not to answer questions each week if he's quarterback number one. Let's take a listen to what Todd Monken had to say.
Iso Joe Johnson (0:14)
Do I love dealing with it every week? Of course not. You guys keep asking, which is a lot of fun. But the reality is, of course, of course, and I'm happy for Deshaun, the way he's played, and I expect an improvement. And I expect continued improvement. I mean, there's a lot of, there's a lot of football left in him. He just hasn't played in a while.
And learning our system and trying to get him consistent with his drops and his reads is part of the process. He's like every player. I see him as a young player. I know people don't want to see it that way, and I haven't been here, but I see him as still a very young player that is going to continue to grow.
Shannon Sharpe (0:58)
Ochocinco.
Chad Johnson (0:59)
Ochocinco. I like it.
Shannon Sharpe (1:01)
He's in his 10th season.
Chad Johnson (1:03)
Yeah. Coach sees it different. Coach wants to view it different. Obviously some of the things that he's saying, Deshaun is going to hear that. How can I motivate my player to continue to play as well as he's played in week two? Give him some positive reinforcement through the media. Media off of him. To get the fans off of him. On top of having the game that he did have, now you're coming in week three, first home game. Getting those cheers, quiet some of the boos.
I like it. He's going to get better. He's getting better with improvement and learning the system. Processing the information fast and playing fast. Let's see if they can do it again.
Back to the feet.
Shannon Sharpe (1:52)
Joe, nah, I ain't with Monken on this.
Chad Johnson (1:57)
Damn.
Shannon Sharpe (1:58)
Nah, I ain't. I ain't talking about you treating him like a young player. That man been in the league a decade, bruh. You know, he get paid a substantial amount of money to go out there and lead a team.
Nah, nah, I expect great. I expect, okay, if it ain't great, I expect for him to be pretty good weekend and week out, Uncle Ochocinco. I mean, what he did this past weekend on a regular basis, bro, 230-some yards or 50-some yards, however many he had. I know he said something about, we think he got to throw for 404 touchdowns. That's good quarterback play this past weekend, bro.
Iso Joe Johnson (2:30)
Yeah. You know what I mean?
Shannon Sharpe (2:31)
And maybe that's his number. Maybe to do what Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen and to do what Mahone Boy did. Maybe that's asking a bit much. But I don't think throwing for 250
Iso Joe Johnson (2:45)
No.
Shannon Sharpe (2:45)
And two touchdowns. I don't think that's asking a bit much. And no turnovers. Just don't turn the ball over. Don't put us in harm's way. You know, if we can get down there, move the chains, if we can get three, we'll take three. But obviously we want to score. Just keep us in the game, bro. Yep. Keep us in the game, and don't turn the ball over. I think Deshaun will be great.
I think that's the way he's going to have to play. Yeah. He's going to have to play, they're going to have to play turnover-free football while taking the ball away.
I don't know if they're good enough. I don't know if his play can be good enough to overcome the mistakes if they make them on offense. It's hard to play defense. It's hard to play defense when your offense is methodical. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they got a big play from Denzel Boston yesterday.
Iso Joe Johnson (3:38)
Yeah.
Shannon Sharpe (3:39)
But it ain't going to be very many times that three guys miss you on the tackle and you go 50 yards, Ocho.
Iso Joe Johnson (3:43)
Yeah. Yeah.
Chad Johnson (3:44)
Very, very, very seldom.
Iso Joe Johnson (3:46)
Yeah.
Shannon Sharpe (3:46)
So I can't count on that being the bulk of my big plays. I'm going to need the potential where guys, hey, can take the top off. I'm going to need guys on the run.
Breaking three tackles and going to the house.
I don't know if I'm building a game plan around guys breaking three, four tackles and taking it to the house. Yeah. So Deshaun is going to have to play games very similar to what he played in Tampa. If he is he capable of doing that, we don't know. We haven't seen the consistency yet. But we saw it yesterday. Let's see if he can string together two, three, four games like what we saw yesterday. I think that gives them a great chance of winning. Other than that, bro, because it's Deshaun, you're going to have pretty much, and if he plays bad, guess what? You will get the same question next week.
