Welcome in What's Wright? with Nick Wright, episode 508 This episode of What's Wright? with Nick Wright, as always, is brought to you by Boost Mobile. One programming note, folks, regular schedule of pods this week and next week, and for the full foreseeable future, the pod schedule is not off. However, the television schedule is. I am. We are off the air on TV today. We're preempted by something. I'm not sure what. And then we are off the air Friday as well. We are preempted by something. I'm not sure what. Which Fridays, Damonza, good to see you, is actually perfect timing because I am taking Danny Parkins to Vegas for his 40th birthday this coming weekend. Oddly, his 40th birthday is in three weeks, and we will be getting to Vegas on my birthday, but that's neither here nor there. It's his birthday trip.

Folks who read the New York Post or follow me on Twitter know my last trip to Vegas was pretty good.

I would talk about it more here, but it's almost a little embarrassing. But poker is going really good. Put a lot of work into it. I have much to the chagrin of your mom and your sisters at times. I have become very, very, very invested in studying it. And it's, you know, I'm hitting a nice little run of two card. And so, feeling good about that.

Well, you know, let's, I'm very, very lucky in that I, this is what I will say real quick before we get to week three in the NFL. Because the New York Post interviewed me. There's a whole like 25 minute actual interview that you can watch on their YouTube page. They gave a very, very quick synopsis of it on, in the article they wrote.

But I am, one of the things, I didn't include in the article, but that I told them, and I'll just reiterate here, and then we'll get to the football, I promise. This is a little self-indulgent. I am very, very lucky to Monza in, over the last few years, I have become very good, close friends with Nick Shulman, who has come on this show as our boxing guy. But he also happens to be, in my opinion, the greatest all-around card player in the world. And a guy that we call TVK, Taylor Von Kriegenberg, who is, you know, one of the most naturally gifted, no-limit hold'em players in the world. And the comp that I gave the New York Post guys, it would be as if someone who's golfed their entire life and has been, you know, like a tin handicap, in an attempt to become a scratch golfer, just happens to be super tight with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. And he can just be like, hey, can you check out my swing real quick and tell me something? Like, I am able to call these guys up, send them spots, pick their brains. And I really, really think that's, you know, helping me.

Damonza (3:10)

Sending them like situations? I'm sorry, I know we're not trying to talk too deep into this, but the coaching on this kind of thing, like how do you go about that? Like, there's the hands, and then outside of that, it's just...

Nick Wright (3:18)

No, so that's exactly it. So it's just, yeah, you send them, you call it spots, but like, hey, you know, in this type of, if I have these cards and this is the action and this is the position I'm in and this is like the flop, like what's the right sizing? Did I overplay that?

You know, is that a mistake? Like, what is? And you can, there's, I mean, there's a real art and a real science to playing poker. And I'm just very, very, very lucky in two regards. One is, like I said, two of the greatest poker minds in the world are guys I talk to multiple times a week on a regular basis. So I, you know what I mean? So I can just kind of pick their brain. And the other one is, because of my profession and my profile, whatever it is, I get into some games that I otherwise probably wouldn't be invited to. So those two things put together has, you know, it's been a perfect storm. It was a really good summer and good early fall for me playing cards. All right. And I actually watched Monday Night Football from a card game. So I'm a little low sleep, but I was dialed into the game.

We all had Bears plus three and a half. We will get to that in a moment. First, though, straight to voicemail brought to you by Boost Mobile. Olivia Miles wins Rookie of the Year. It was unanimous. Anything else would have been outrageous. We are not getting to our MLB playoff predictions. However, you know what? The Brewers deserve to make a World Series. I wouldn't hate. I think that would be kind of cool. I don't know if Fox would be thrilled, but a Brewers raise World Series is probably the two best teams. And a story that totally missed my radar is Yannis being scared of iguanas. You can email us, by the way, at whatswrightmailbag.gmail.com.
