Nobody respects authority in America anymore. The NFL just suspended two officials this week, and a former Chicago bear through a tiny security officer through a wall. And both stories are about the same disease. This is entitlement meeting a culture that has decided every uniform is the enemy. Refs, cops, it does not matter. If you wear one, you're in the crosshairs. Jeff Seeman got two games for cursing at Trey McBride after McBride thought he was interfered with. Adrian Hill got one game for jumping up and yelling at Eric Wilson after Wilson got shoved into him and knocked him down. I'm not defending cursing at the players. I'm not defending the ref jumping up and overreacting to get an accidentally knocked down. But think about what we ask these guys to do. Every close play is reviewed in slow motion and they get screamed at by players, cursed at by players, threatened by players, coaches and fans. No matter what they call, everybody is on the ref.
Now, imagine all the pressure the NFL puts on refs, all the judgment calls, all the extra officiating that they beg for, ask for. These guys got judgment calls about whether to go to the bathroom or not. Warren Sharp, the excellent football analyst over social media, he put out the numbers this week and they are wild. Week four, average 17 flags a game, the most in any week since 2015
17 touchdowns have been wiped out, overturned already. Last year at this point, it was five. Listen, do you remember last week or was it two weeks ago, when I started talking about the officiating and we started talking about how over officiated these games are? Well, again, we keep giving them more judgment calls. We keep letting them be the main determinants in these games. They decide drives and games, and then act shocked when they crack under the pressure. The league puts them in the crosshairs and then suspends them for flinching. You cannot call that tight and expect nobody to lose their temper. It's going to happen. Well, now let's move out to Soldier Field. Five foot four, off-duty female officer, working security. She told Otis Wilson, the legendary Bears linebacker from the 1985 Bears, she told Otis Wilson and his wife, hey, look, this is a media only elevator.
Step off, because they were the last ones to get on, Otis Wilson and his wife, a elevator reserve for the media. She asked him twice, and his response was like, okay then, and then he did not move. Reporters were in there trying to get to work, and there are witnesses to it. As the female officer, she first pulled Otis Wilson's wife off, then she tried to pull Otis Wilson off, then a male officer came, but before the male officer could get there, Otis Wilson threw this woman through a wall, threw the woman, a bunch of witnesses. They didn't actually see the toss, but they, cause the elevator closed, actually she yanked them off, forgot them off, but they heard the impact inside the elevator.
When the elevator opened back up, she's on the ground, rib injury, arm injury, and headed to the hospital.
Wilson says security hit his wife first, and he ended up in the hospital too with no injuries. Police are still investigating, we have not seen the video, and I can't wait to see it, and I hope there is video. But here's what bothers me, too many people online blame the officer for not knowing who Otis Wilson was. Doesn't she know he belongs on a media elevator, because he's a former Bears all time great. He won a Super Bowl with the Bears 40 years ago. How dare this tiny female officer not know who Otis Wilson was, and bend over backwards and genuflect in front of Otis Wilson.
She should have just let him go, because he doesn't have to obey the rules. Don't you know he's a former all time great Chicago Bear? He's an athlete. That is entitlement.
Do you know who I am replaces yes ma'am and yes sir.
I feel sorry for that officer because she was set up to fail too. You do not put a small woman in a crowded stadium elevator to physically move a former NFL linebacker who does not want to move. That's bad planning and she should not be in that job in the first place because she's a woman. But she certainly shouldn't be in that job when nobody respects the uniform, nobody expects authority when everybody is in rebellion against authority. Players argue every call, fans threaten reps, a simple ask to leave an elevator turns into a fight. The uniform does not mean anything anymore. This is where we are. Athletes think status means rules do not apply. Fans think status means rules do not apply. Regular people think filming it and yelling means they are in charge and they're doing something for society. And the people in the middle, the ref, trying to control a game with 17 flags or a cop trying to clear an elevator, take all the heat. If we do not teach basic respect for authority again, do not be surprised when fewer good people want to wear a uniform and try to enforce authority. That is not sustainable. Somebody has to be in charge or nothing works.
