Hilton, for the stay.
NASA and IBM made an AI model for exploring the moon.
Trump Mobile's T1 Phone now costs 250 bucks more, and Microsoft struck a deal with a National Teachers Union to not use school data to train AI.
It's Thursday, September 10th, and here's a quick look at some of the news happening in the sphere of tech this morning from Engadget.
You know, this past spring, the world experienced a rare moment of collective joy and awe when NASA's Artemis 2 mission, the first crewed flight to the moon since 1972, completed its historic lunar flyby. Now, as NASA prepares for the next Artemis mission and beyond, the space agency is working with IBM to give scientists new tools to study the moon. On Thursday, the two organizations released the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model. It's an open-source AI system that's available to download from Hugging Face. As a foundation model, it can do a few different things. To start, NASA and IBM found it was particularly adept at identifying areas on the lunar surface where there might be ice. The two organizations ran a test where they compared the model's predictions against a map they made using a published scientific workflow that incorporates terrain, thermal and other environmental data. They then pitted the model against SwinV2B, a Microsoft-trained vision system for processing high-resolution images. The NASA-IBM model reduced errors by 23%.
NASA and IBM compared the model against SwinV2B because the tool is often used as the baseline for many image analysis tasks. NASA and IBM also benchmarked their model's ability to identify and classify craters. There, the new model outperformed SwinV2B by 19%, while using half the training data. NASA and IBM got a chance to verify the model's capabilities recently when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashed into the moon on August 5th. When IBM fed an image of the impact to the model, it correctly identified the crash site as a new crater, despite it closely overlapping with an existing crater. T1 Phone Trump Mobile's golden T1 phone now cost $749. That's a $250 price hike from the $499, making the T1 more expensive than the iPhone 17e. The price hike was first reported by The Verge, which also noted that the provider did not make an announcement about it and just quietly updated its website. While Trump Mobile did not explain why, the T1 now costs a lot more. Tech companies have been raising the prices of their products across the board recently due to skyrocketing costs of RAM. No one is safe from the ramageddon, which is what people are calling the memory chip shortage problem currently plaguing the electronics industry due to massive AI build-outs. In fact, Apple just increased the prices of older iPhones by $100. Almost three months after it raised the prices of iPads, Macbooks and its MacStudio computer. In addition, the T1's price increase seems expected. Trump Mobile's execs previously said that the $499 price tag was just introductory and that buyers could be paying $1,000 for it in the future. Take note that an iFixit teardown had revealed that the phone is not made in the USA, which Trump Mobile initially claimed, and is pretty much a reskinned version of an HTC handset.
