The only way to bag a classy lady is to give her two tickets to the gun show.
Guy Relford (0:06)
It's Monday, gun day, with the gun guy.
Hammer (0:09)
Just watch out for the guns.
Nigel (0:11)
They'll get you.
Guy Relford (0:12)
I am real quick. Stop calling your arms guns. The Hammer and Nigel Show.
Nigel (0:17)
Hey, yeah, my name is Nigel, Jason Hammer right over there with a very special guest on the hotline.
Hammer (0:23)
He is a 2A attorney. He's a firearms instructor, and he had the same amount of tackles as our starting linebacker yesterday, Guy Relford. How are you, my friend?
Guy Relford (0:35)
I am great. And thanks as always to our sponsor for Monday Gun Day. That's Premier Arms in Brownsburg, with the largest selection of new use and historic firearms in the Midwest. MPA jewelers located in the farmhouse right out front. Check them out at 3754 South Green Street in Brownsburg, or premierorns.com.

Guy, before we get into some actual matters of importance here, I know NFL Sundays, especially Colt game days, are a big deal at your house. Usually you got some awesome piece of meat on the grill in the smoker. You got the jersey on.
Nigel (1:09)
The TV's outside on the deck.
Hammer (1:11)
At what point in that game yesterday did you realize, ah, crap?
Guy Relford (1:16)
Yeah, very, very early.
And I'll tell you what, we had to go out of our way to watch any of it. My wife and I are actually traveling. We went to the Cubbies game on Saturdays, and then we went down to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri yesterday, and we're on our way to Biloxi, Mississippi, to the Gulf Coast, to Mississippi right now. So to take any time out of our travel schedule and watch that piece of dirt in the football game was definitely a waste of time.
Hammer (1:47)
But I bet you had a good time up in Wrigleyville though, and I believe you saw a win where the Cubs bullpen didn't completely crap the bed, right?
Guy Relford (1:55)
I'll tell you what, man, you're going in to the ninth and you're up by one run. I'll tell you what, it got a little dicey, but they pulled it out. So yeah, the bullpen didn't crash like they've been doing so much of lately.
Hammer (2:09)
Let's get into it here.
There's a story here from Indy that's getting national attention. I think I saw this on the New York Post even. Indiana homeowner charged after shooting suspicious man trying to break into his home and various cars.
That's a pretty interesting headline, and I'm sure that a lawyer would probably have a field day trying to pick apart. Guy, walk me through what's going on here.
Guy Relford (2:37)
Yeah, I'll tell you what, there are a lot of lessons to be learned from this case, and I think it's going to be interesting to watch how it unfolds. But this is, yeah, this is actually up in Fort Wayne, and this guy, Martell Pickens, is a homeowner, 30 years old. And late at night, he sees, I think, through a video camera, and there's somebody trying to break into his car. At one point, the same guy comes up and tries to enter his home, that is Mr. Pickens' home, and can't get into the home. Goes, tries to get in some other vehicles right there in the area. At this point, the homeowner actually leaves his house, challenges this guy named Codolfi Taylor, but like, what are you doing? And took his gun with him at the time.
This guy apparently starts walking toward Mr. Pickens.
Pickens later told police that he could tell that Taylor was unarmed, but as he walked toward Pickens, Pickens raised the gun and shot him, and Taylor ultimately died. And so now he's being charged, the homeowner is actually being charged with reckless homicide, an interesting charge, and the Allen County Prosecutor wants to put this guy in prison. So a lot of people have been sending me links to this and asking me about it. I didn't have a show yesterday since Saturday, rather, since we were at Wrigley, but I'll get into it in more detail when I can. But it's very interesting to see that this guy is being charged after a guy tried to enter his home. And I think the key here is that for the Castle Doctrine, which Indiana has, which allows you to use deadly force on some circumstances to prevent an unlawful entry into your home, typically requires that at the time you use deadly force, someone's actively trying to get in your home. They've either already entered your home unlawfully or they're trying to get in. That's when deadly force is justified. This guy had tried to get in, then kind of wandered off and was trying to get into vehicles. And the homeowner leaves his home, challenges him, ends up shooting him, and now is being charged. So, the two main points are leaving your home is never smart, because it looks like you're the aggressor at that point. But secondly, someone really needs to be actively trying to enter your home for the Castle Doctrine to be implicated.
