So, Guy, we were talking a little bit earlier about the shooting at the Beech Grove fireworks in the park.
This was a group of juveniles, as it's being reported. No arrests being made yet. But still, all of the there are too many guns. People are the first ones to social media. It's the guns. It's the guns. Too many guns. What are your thoughts?
**Guy Relford** (1:20)
Well, it's the same old discussion, unfortunately, and these people don't seem to quite understand, which is that passing more laws, which is always the implication, right? We have too many guns on the street. We need more laws. We need laws to take guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have guns. Well, there are already laws on the books that say if you're underage or you have criminal history in terms of felonies or whatnot, you can't carry a gun, which is going to disqualify 99 percent of the people involved in exactly like these kinds of incidents. Mainly juveniles, well, they can't legally carry a gun. People want to blame constitutional carry. Doesn't apply to you if you're under 18, which is exactly what we're looking at with these incidents. We see it over and over again.
I always say, and it gets tiresome, having to respond the same way to these same people, but I always respond as, you know, what one additional law are we going to pass that suddenly, magically, people are going to start following when they're already breaking multiple laws? That's something that has never made any sense to me, but that's the debate we continue to have.
**Jason Hammer** (2:25)
It's Monday, Gun Day with the Gun Guy, Guy Relford here on The Hammer and Nigel Show. Guy, let's pivot to the Supreme Court here.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear challenges to assault weapons ban. Now, there's a lot of key words in that headline right there. Walk me through this.
**Guy Relford** (2:44)
Yeah, and this is a big, big deal. This is likely to be the biggest Second Amendment news we get in quite some time, because a number of states and some localities, like city of Chicago, have passed their own so-called assault weapon ban. Now, as we've talked about, assault weapon tends to be a political term that is made, you know, created to demonize the most popular rifles in America, but they define them as generally a semi-automatic firearm capable of accepting a detachable magazine with some other scary features like a pistol grip or a flash hider or something along those lines. And then they list them generally anymore when they pass these laws. They list specific makes and models. So they'll include a bunch of AR-15s. They'll include a bunch of AK-47s. And then they'll end with saying, you know, and the like. And they'll say, well, it's illegal to possess these. It's illegal to sell these. It's illegal to buy these. Illegal to transfer them as between private individuals. Different bans approach it different ways. But this has been highly litigated for quite some time, where a lot of us have said, you can't ban whole classes of firearms, including the most commonly owned rifles in America, under the Second Amendment, particularly since we have a lot of clarification on how to go through a Second Amendment analysis, when those laws are challenged in court. Well, we haven't been able to get the Supreme Court to take one of these cases. Some of the lower courts have gone through intellectual gymnastics, trying to uphold these bans, but Supreme Court now has taken one, and taken two, in fact.
Those will be decided next term, probably around the end of the year, is when I would expect a decision. But for all the politicians who every time we turn around, someone's saying, we need to ban assault weapons.
