This is a True Crime Roundup from The On Deadline Podcast. We explore crime stories reported on by Audacy's radio newsrooms across the country. I'm your host, Lauren Barry.

This week, we're exploring the continued reverberations of the Lindsay Clancy case. Clancy's case ended in a mistrial. Will the Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three young children face another trial? Will the defense and prosecution come to an agreement that allows her to stay in a mental institution? We'll hear experts weigh in on those questions and how the Clancy trial might impact other cases going forward.

Then we'll hear about one of the conspiracy theories that's bloomed since the trial started. But first, we're going to look at recent crime updates. In the Los Angeles area, Audacy station KNX News reported on an officer involved shooting.

Brad Young (1:06)

LAPD officers shot and killed a man who they say attacked them.

Scott Parks (1:10)

This was in Boyle Heights earlier this morning.

Investigators are now reviewing body cam video of the incident. We get the latest from Pete Demetriou.

Hollenbeck Division officers came to a home in the 600 block of Gillette Street to deal with a situation involving an emotionally distraught man who reportedly lived there and was armed with what initially was called a long pipe. LAPD Captain Mike Bland offered more details.

Mike Bland (1:30)

What the officers saw when they arrived was this roughly 10 foot long pole and at the edge of that pole is a serrated blade roughly 10 to 12 inches in length and he advanced towards them with that blade and that pole in his hand. Something that's similar to what you would see in landscaping to cut branches from a tree.

The officers tried to redeploy their proximity to the man in order to deescalate the situation, but when the man kept advancing, at least one officer fired and struck the man hitting him in the chest. He was transported to LA. County General Hospital where he died several hours later. At this point, force investigation detectives have downloaded and are reviewing the images from the body cams worn by the officers prior to questioning them.

District Attorney's Office also has investigators reviewing the initial aspects of the incident. In Boyle Heights, I'm Pete Demetrio, KNX News.

KNX also reported on a trial underway regarding a fatal crash.

The trial now underway in the case against a woman accused of causing a crash that killed six people in Windsor Hills, where Craig Figner is tracking it for us.

Craig Figner (2:29)

Security video showed a Mercedes with what witnesses at the time had described as a vehicle that appeared to be driving with its pedal to the floor, blasting through a Windsor Hills intersection and causing a deadly and fiery crash. This was at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson back in 2022

The alleged driver, Nicole Linton, of Houston, a traveling nurse, is charged now with six counts of murder and numerous counts of vehicular manslaughter. The victims included a woman and her unborn child. The woman was eight and a half months pregnant. Linton has pleaded not guilty. There have been earlier court hearings in this case where her defense has indicated that Linton was suffering a mental health crisis at the time of the crash. I'm Craig Figner, KNX News.

Lauren Barry (3:16)

Mental health became an important talking point in the Lindsay Clancy case before it ended in a mistrial earlier this month.

Clancy had a documented history of mental health issues leading up to the murders of her children. However, she wasn't diagnosed with the condition that her defense attorneys argued played a major role in her actions on January 24, 2023 That condition is postpartum psychosis. Clancy's story opened up a conversation about postpartum disorders and mental illness. In the aftermath of the mistrial, Brian Mazurowski and Susan Rose, hosts of A New Morning out of Audacy station WBEN in Buffalo, had questions about mental illness and the limits of when it can be used by a defense team in criminal trials. They asked crime and terrorism expert Brad Garrett to help explain.

Brian Mazurowski (4:23)

How does the law differ from, I guess what I want to call is common sense. You know, when you talk about, was she in her right mind when we did this? And I don't know, Brad, I would kind of, you know, come back with, and maybe this is just, you know, an individual juror question on how you feel, and that's up for the jury to decide. But, you know, to me, nobody would be in their right mind committing a murder against anybody. I mean, how far can you go in claiming, whether it's psychosis or something else happening in your mind when you're doing a despicable act like this? I mean, it's not a normal thing for anybody to do. And it's one of these cases where I could see a slippery slope. Well, oh, well, if that person, you're not in your right mind, you're not criminally responsible, then who is?
