And they ain't paid rent in 30 years. And they'll call me and say, hey, you know, Michael, we need some new cabinets in the house. You been standing up for 30 years. You ain't paid rent or nothing. And what are you doing? You know, we have these burdens that they don't, because our family feel, remember I brought you some sneakers when you were in the eighth grade, you should be able to get in this house.
Like you got those sneakers.

1 Timothy, chapter 5, verses 3 through 5 and verse 8 Honor widows that are widows indeed, but if any widow have children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety at home and to requite their parents. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he have denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.

Irvin said it like it was a joke. Seven homes in Florida, seven relatives in every single one of them. 30 years and not one of them has paid rent. He said it like a flex. It's not a flex. It's a hostage situation with better real estate. Call it what it actually is. Not charity, tribute. Charity moves towards need and stops when the need ends. Tribute moves towards blood and never stops because blood doesn't run out.
Michael Irvin isn't feeding widows and orphans. He's funding grown men and women who've built their whole adult lives around one fact. He can't say no.
You just heard Paul lay out, Paul of the Bible lay out the actual filter, a real widow, no husband, no children, no grandchildren, nobody left. The church carries her.
But if she has children or grandchildren, the debt runs to them first, not to the church, not to the famous relative with the biggest name in the family group chat. And then the verse that ends the argument, if a man will not provide for his own house, he is denied the faith. Read that again, slow.
It doesn't say the extended family is old support. It says the extended family owes support to the ones who genuinely can't work. The obligation runs the opposite direction from every excuse currently being made in Irvin's living room. He's not failing some Biblical duty by setting a boundary. He's fulfilling one. The people who abuse the seven houses are the ones failing it.

So Paul saw this coming 2,000 years before Irvin signed a lease. He never asked anybody to sign.
Idle hands don't rest. They wander, they gossip, they manage everybody else's business because they've got no business of their own. 30 years of unpaid rent isn't bad luck. It's the exact outcome scripture predicted when you subsidize capability instead of need.
Now split this down the middle because it splits clean into two separate sins, wearing the same shirt. The ignorance is real. A lot of these athletes grew up in houses where nobody opened a Bible to check the terms of the obligation. They absorbed a folk theology off the porch instead.
Blood is blood. Family is family. You made it so you owe it. Nobody set them down with this chapter and showed them Paul drawing a hard line between the widow with nothing and the relative who could work but won't. So the athlete signs the check believing he's being a man, believing scripture backs him even when scripture is standing on the other side of the room unread. The exploitation is just as real and it doesn't need import ignorance to survive. It needs the athlete's ignorance, which is a different thing entirely.
Somebody in that house knows exactly what he's doing. He knows what Shane does to a man a few years removed from a Super Bowl ring, sitting across from a relative saying, he's turning his back on his own kind, his own blood.
He knows the check clears faster than the conversation about why it shouldn't. This isn't a man who fell into dependency by accident. This is a man who ran the numbers and found out guilt pays better than a job. That's not family. That's a business model with a bloodline serving as collateral. I've made this case before about a different kind of pusher man. Grievance sells, dependency sells. The person selling it doesn't want the customer healed because a healed customer stops the buying. A relative who gets a job gets his own lease, his own contract. He's off the payroll. So the story stays the same for 30 years. Not because the story is true, because the story pays.
