Scripture calls it something else. Here's what the city is selling. Free supervised childcare, dinner included. Kids ages 16 to 13, welcome. Rec centers across all five boroughs, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration required, first come, first serve. Up to 500 children in one night. Oh, the pitch sounds awesome.
Mom and dad get a date night. The city watches the kids. Nobody pays a babysitter.
Everybody wins.
Except the parent who just taught that child, the state can replace them for an evening and call it love. This is Dead Fire.

Deuteronomy 6 does not say, hand your son or daughter to a municipal employee and go eat somewhere nice. It says these words, I command you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children. When you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, when you rise.
That is not a suggestion from a lifestyle blog. That is a charge from God to the parent, not to the mayor, not to Parks and Recreation, not to a stranger with a clipboard and a free chicken finger tray.
The government can feed a body for four hours. It cannot raise a soul for one. Every hour you outsource to a badge is an hour you do not know what your child was taught, what they were shown, or what they were told to believe about themselves, about you, about God, about the country they live in. You do not get the curriculum. You get the flyer. This is not charity. This is practice. A government that wants to feed your children eventually wants to form them. Free tonight, familiar by next year, comfortable the year after that, and one day, the parent who used to be the first teacher becomes the guest who drops the kid off and picks them up when the program ends. Mamdani is not inventing a babysitter. He is normalizing a substitute. The state as the soft parent, the state as the safe parent, the state as the parent who never says no, never disciplines, never preaches, never prays, and never asked your permission for the world view it hands your child between 4 and 8 p.m. You think the danger is a bad apple on staff. That is the small danger. The big danger is a good program that slowly trains a generation to trust the city more than the home. Nobody is focusing, forcing your hand. Mamdani put the offer on the table. You decide if you take it. A strong father does not need the mayor to buy him 4 hours. A faithful mother does not outsource the dinner table to a rec center so the marriage can breathe. If your marriage needs air, find a grandmother, find a church sister, find a neighbor you know by name, find someone who answers to you, not to a press conference. The government was never built to be a parent. It was built to get out of the way of them. August 16th is not a night out.
It is a test. How many parents still believe the home is holy ground, and how many will trade it for free pizza and a clean conscience from City Hall? I know where I stand on this.
Leave the kids with people who love them, not with people who need them for a pilot program. So that's my Harmony Firestarter. When you covered every basis that needs to be covered, especially bringing in that Deuteronomy verse, you're absolutely right, because that's indicative of the community that we as Christians are supposed to be surrounding our children by. That's going to train them up, or help us as parents train them up in the faith. And it's interesting, because what you see Mamdani doing with this situation is, in a sense, biting from a longstanding Christian tradition.
