Welcome to the Total Soccer Show, and our review of Matchday 2 of the Champions League, League phase, colon, the phasening, subtitle, the road to Madrid, parentheses. Don't criticise your sporting director post-match. On this episode, we'll have some debates about City and PSG's Battle of Nations states. Man United were dealt two blows, one by Atleti and one by Lisandro. And we'll talk about that tricky region where big teams can't beat Norwegians. My name's Ryan Bailey, joining me today, Taylor Rockwell. Hello, Taylor, how are you?
Taylor Rockwell (0:55)
I am doing very well, Ryan Bailey. That was a lovely introduction. Though I have to say, the quote of the week goes to, I believe it was Rob Green on commentary saying, a man against his former club against a man against his former club, describing Ferran Torre. Who was taking the penalty against Donnarumma?
Yeah, that was a lovely moment and a lovely bit of wordplay there. But Ryan, yours exceptional as always.
Ryan Bailey (1:19)
Rob Green's broken my brain slightly there. I'm going to have to think that one through a little bit. But thank you very much.
Joseph Lowery (1:24)
The players used to play for the other team. It's just a fancy way of saying that.
Ryan Bailey (1:29)
Hi, Joe Lowry. How are you?
Joseph Lowery (1:30)
Hey, I'm great. I really enjoyed that you rhymed region with Norwegian, if I caught that correctly. That is high-level stuff. I think that's one that I don't think I've ever put together in my head before. Delightful.
Ryan Bailey (1:41)
Thank you very much, Joe. Glad to have you here. As we're glad to have Graham Rotherton too. Graham, how are you doing?
Graham Ruthven (1:46)
I'm good, Ryan Bailey. I'm personally glad that you didn't introduce me with the ruthlessness of Kate Scott introduced in Michael Richards on CBS two nights ago. Brittle.
Taylor Rockwell (1:56)
What was it?
Joseph Lowery (1:57)
What happened?
Ryan Bailey (1:58)
Joe, if you didn't see, basically, introduced Thierry Henry, World Cup winner, Champions League winner, Premier League winner, Jamie Carragher, Champions League winner, not Premier League winner, whatever he's got, and then Mika Richards, who might have to mail back whatever he won in a few weeks, something like that.
Taylor Rockwell (2:15)
I believe she begins it with already the least accomplished person on this panel, and then, who might have to send his medals back to Manchester United in Stoke, depending on how things go. Yeah, yeah.
Ooh, and he was just silent on that one. She always roasts him so well.
Ryan Bailey (2:31)
It was good.
That's her shtick, she does do that usually. I think he knows it's coming, but particularly pertinent in light of current affairs, shall we say. Very good stuff from them. Very good stuff coming from us over the next 45, or so, before we get there, patreon.com/totalsoccershow, we will see, and we'll see on patreon.com/totalsoccershow about our bonus content. All of the Champions League, League phase, the phase ending match day two we don't film this episode, we'll put over there succinctly, and you'll get other bonus episodes, access to our Discord, all that fun stuff. It's a great way to support us. Thank you to everybody who does. All right, why don't we kick off in Manchester, where PSG got a 4-2 win over City, a 2-2 end in Bele, inspiring what was a pretty thrilling game, I'd say, certainly for PSG. They looked pretty imperious for large spells of it. Valiant Comeback was attempted by City. We had Pep Guardiola, I remember him, he was in attendance at this game. Pep Guardiola, who famously said, if you lie to me the day after, I'm not here. I'll be out and you will not be my friend anymore. That Pep Guardiola, that's the same one who was in the stadium for this game.
Graham Ruthven (3:36)
How do we know that he's still friends with Man City? I mean, he just spent the evening in the executive box as the VIP guest of the club, sitting next to the chairman and the owner, but they could be enemies, no? We don't know.
Ryan Bailey (3:49)
That's true. They do say keep them closer. Exactly.
That is his technique. It could be that. It definitely could be that. Can I start off by saying, how do we feel about this fixture in general? Obviously, two nations say it's going against each other. But in terms of Manchester City, they haven't specifically broken the rules of this contest. Lately. They're not awaiting punishment for this competition.
Graham Ruthven (4:15)
Since the time they were banned from this competition a few seasons ago.
