LinkedIn is adding new tools to help people with their side hustles. More on that in moments, but first, Tesla's Roadster launch event was pretty exciting, to say the least, with loads of car stunts that we enjoyed watching. The Roadster first appeared during the event at the bottom of a C-shaped ramp. It drove up, twice, and stopped at the top of the ramp perpendicular to the ground. After the second time, the car jumped off the ramp, rolled over, and safely hovered to the ground, thanks to its cold gas thrusters that used technology borrowed from SpaceX. The automaker also made the Roadster jump over several of its vehicles parked side by side. And near the end of the presentation, the Roadster did one last flip, jumping from stationary position, turning over in the air, and then hovering back down. Tesla's next-gen Roadster is now available for reservation. It will cost you $5,000 to make a reservation right now, with an additional $45,000 due within 10 days for the base vehicle. If you want the version with suctions, which enabled it to hang upside down on the ramp and accelerator thrusters, the reservation will cost you $250,000.
The version of the Roadster that can jump up and hover, however, will only be available to select customers, with the reservation being invite only.
And OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome, giving it the power to look at your tabs so it can come up with more personalized and useful answers to your queries. The company used to have a browser of its own, but it retired the product on August 9th. It did, however, roll out upgrades to the Chrome extension that made ChatGPT a more viable alternative to Gemini in the browser. With these latest updates, ChatGPT can now do even more tasks inside Chrome. If you're in ChatGPT Chat, you can ask the AI assistant to take a look at your open tabs on Chrome to conjure answers that would personally be useful. You can, for instance, ask it to compare couches opened on three different tabs by their dimensions, prices, delivery time, and return policy. Meanwhile, if you're using ChatGPT work, OpenAI's agent designed for complex multi-step tasks, you can ask the assistant to send messages, fill out forms, and organize tabs for you. You can ask ChatGPT to fill out a form for your new dentist, and then add your schedule to the calendar, for instance. Another example is to get the chatbot to analyze several contractors' terms, open in multiple tabs, and then draft an email to the provider that fits your needs the most. In addition, ChatGPT in Chrome's sidebar now has access to your whole history, so you can talk to it and give it tasks without having to tab away from what you were doing. You can get the ChatGPT extension no matter what plan you have. Opening I says that, aside from Chrome, the extension is also compatible with other Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera.
LinkedIn is adding a bunch of new features meant to help people keep up with their side hustles, vibe coding projects, and other pursuits that might not align with their day job. The company is tweaking profiles so people can highlight multiple jobs and introducing new creator-focused tools for founders. Some of the changes are meant to make it easier for people to keep up with people they actually know on the platform. The service is testing a network feed that will only show posts and updates from existing connections and accounts you follow, rather than algorithmic recommendations. And it's adding a business card feature that can be added to your phone's wallet app to make it easier to connect on LinkedIn with people you meet IRL. Founders and business owners will also have a new way to monetize their LinkedIn presence with something called Advice Sessions. The feature will allow people to offer paid one-on-one meetings and consultations through the platform. The company says the feature will initially be available to those with a business premium subscription in the US and that it won't take a cut of users' earnings from these sessions. LinkedIn is introducing other creator-centric tools, too, including a new analytics dashboard so people can better understand how their posts are performing. For creators making video content, the platform plans to expand its revenue sharing program that passes on a cut of revenue generated by pre-roll ads. All of the changes, according to LinkedIn, are meant to reflect the fact that work looks different now for a lot of people, thanks to the rise of AI. The company says it's seen a 70% increase in people who have added founder to their profiles over the last year, and that more people are listing multiple ongoing roles in their profiles. I asked the company's chief product officer, Harry Srinivasan, if that's because AI is making it easier and faster to start a new venture, or if disruptions in the labor market from AI are forcing people to get more creative. He said the company's data shows there are definitely more people starting businesses now, though it's hard to tell what the underlying reasons for that may be. He also noted that there's more to starting a new venture than simply vibe coding a piece of software. You can't build all this incredible stuff with AI, but I don't know if it's necessarily made it easier to build a business.
