Oil exporters try to normalize global supplies and an escape from the world of AI. Just for a bit.
From Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. We're starting with oil this morning, and despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, global commodities tracking firm Kepler says crude oil exports from the region hit pre-war levels in the latter part of September. Brent crude is currently trading at $102.97 a barrel. This comes as key members of OPEC pledge to keep their oil production targets steady next month. They made the announcement after a brief meeting yesterday, but as Marketplace's Nancy Marshall Genzer explains, their promises might not mean much.
Nancy Marshall-Genzer (1:43)
OPEC issued a press release yesterday with a promising headline. It says core OPEC members known as the OPEC plus countries are reaffirming their commitment to market stability. OPEC plus includes Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and Oman, and allies like Russia.
Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Russia pledge to produce the most oil next month, but these are mostly paper targets. OPEC plus countries have been missing their quotas because of the war in the Middle East. Reuters estimates their exports have only reached 60 to 80 percent of normal levels in the past few months.
OPEC plus says it will meet again on November 1st. They've delayed their annual capacity review. That helps them settle on their production quotas for next year, including decisions on which countries get to produce more oil. I'm Nancy Marshall-Genzer for Marketplace.

This year has been dominated by headlines about artificial intelligence. One forecast predicts spending on AI will reach $2.7 trillion this year. That's trillion with a T.
But as the AI buildout accelerates, some are looking for ways to slow down. I found evidence of that at MakerSpace NYC, a community workshop in New York, busy with people sewing, welding, drilling, making things. Some just for fun, but for others, it's where they make their living.
The sawdust is flying in the MakerSpace wood shop when I visit on a Tuesday afternoon. Scott Van Campen, executive director here, is showing me around, pointing out folks one by one who have come to depend on this place to run their small businesses.
Scott Van Campen (4:59)
We're really super proud to be able to support those people as they get a foothold in their industry.
Kimberly Adams (5:06)
Creators can rent tools and other resources from the MakerSpace for a fraction of what it would cost them to buy them outright. Scott co-founded this nonprofit with his wife, DB. Lampman, in 2013
DB Lampman (5:19)
I think 90% of the people that are here are freelancers that are doing it as a business.
Kimberly Adams (5:25)
I meet one of these entrepreneurs, Simon Berry, in the sewing area.
