How AI is changing the legal industry and which industries are spending big in Campaign 2026
From Marketplace in New York, I'm Kimberly Adams. Yesterday, the biggest names in AI, Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, were at the White House for a meeting with President Trump for a discussion on how the federal government is planning to review certain AI models for security risks. AI has already changed many industries, including the legal field, where it's brought new efficiencies to tasks like research and drafting contracts, but it's also led to some high-profile mistakes. University of Toronto law professor, Benjamin Alari, wants to see AI tackle some of the biggest failings of our justice system, like the lack of access to legal resources, slow processes, and inconsistencies in how the law is applied. He was recently on Marketplace Tech where he spoke with my colleague, Megan McCarty-Corino, about this topic and his new book, Super Justice, Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Here's Professor Alari.

I think by super justice, I mean this idea of relieving legal scarcity. So legal reasoning, legal help will become very abundant. We don't have to accept the old scarcity of legal help, and we can embrace new ways of organizing ourselves legally, our legal institutions, our frameworks, our policies to better secure the promise of the rule of law, which is a fairer society for everyone.

Yeah, and a related concept in your book is the idea of personalized laws. We hear a lot about personalization with AI. What does that look like for law?

**Benjamin Alari** (2:25)
In law, I think it means same rights, same rules for everybody, but what gets personalized is the explanation of the law and the route through the law, not necessarily what you're entitled to. One example could be different speed limits on different roadways and different weather conditions. And so, somebody driving down a particular stretch of road in the day may face a higher speed limit than somebody driving on a wet, rainy evening.

And we're still waiting on results from some of yesterday's primary elections, but with the primaries we've already had, and what we know so far from yesterday, we are starting to get a pretty good idea of what the political lineup for the November election will look like. We've also got a good sense for who the big political spenders are in the campaign as well.
Crypto went all in on the 2024 elections, raising about $245 million, according to CNBC, citing data from the Federal Election Commission. Now, the AI industry is following Crypto's playbook, says Brendan Glavin, Director of Insights at Open Secrets, which tracks money in politics.

Crypto was very big in 2024 It was seen as a success the way that they spent directly on elections.
So, they're repeating that. And then folks like the AI industry have decided, well, we're going to follow that model. And they've been spending heavily directly on elections.

**Kimberly Adams** (3:55)
Beyond Crypto and AI, Glavin says the online gambling industry is also playing a role in this year's primaries.

There's a number of groups, businesses involved in that industry who have gotten together and put money into a super PAC. And they're starting to get involved and spend money on elections as well.
