The defense resting yesterday in the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, following the prosecution resting its case in a rare Saturday court session. The defense beginning the day calling a teenage witness to the stand. This witness, a member of the Centennial High track and football teams, along with the defendant, Anthony.
The witness testifying that Anthony's team did not have its own tent at the rainy meet and had been moving around the stadium as the weather shifted. The witness going on to say he later saw Anthony sitting in the bleachers under the Memorial High School tent, which appeared crowded. At first, the witness testifying, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then, he heard yelling. The witness saying people under the tent stopped watching the meet and turned toward the commotion. As he walked closer, the witness testifying, he saw arms reach out and make contact with Anthony. Moments later, he said the crowd got louder. People started standing up, and he saw Austin Metcalf lift his shirt and say he had been stabbed. The witness saying Anthony was crying, and there was a coach kind of comforting him. The defense asking, you could hear him crying? The witness replying, yes, sir. I heard him saying, I told him not to touch me.
The defense following up, how was he distraught? The witness replying, yes, very distraught. But on cross, prosecutors working to turn the defense's witness into a liability. The state focusing on the timeline and whether the witness had mixed up what happened before the stabbing with what happened after. The prosecutor asking, you had a few things wrong when we talked, isn't that right? The witness answering, yes, sir. Prosecutors then pressing him on his earlier statement to police when he described seeing Anthony surrounded. The witness acknowledging that what he described to police as Anthony being surrounded must have happened after Metcalf had already been stabbed. The prosecutor asking whether the witness had, a story in your head before watching video of the confrontation. The witness again answering, yes.
