Hi, I'm Molly Jong-Fast, and this is Fast Politics, where we discuss the top political headlines with some of today's best minds. And Melania Trump says he's doing the best he can. Oh, well, in that case, we have such a great show for you today. The Jim Acosta Show's Jim Acosta stops by to talk about Trump wrecking the American economy. Then we'll talk to former US pardon attorney Liz Oyer about Trump's Justice Department giving Ghislane Maxwell preferential treatment, but first the news.

Jim Acosta (0:32)

So, Molly, as we know, Trump surrounds himself in this term much more with sycophants who will do anything to tell him that he is the greatest of all time. And part of that is also that they want to keep their meal ticket, so they're urging him to declare martial law for the midterms.

Molly Jong-Fast (0:48)

Yeah, so this is a story from The Atlantic. Trump's advisors have been working for months to move his focus away from baseless theories of election fraud. But there are a group of outsiders who are trying a different task, and they would like Trump to seize control of federal elections this fall. These are like the dregs, right? Tina Peters, Peter Tichtin, all of the really people who should belong in jail. Wayne Alan Root, these are people from the bowels of the internet, people for whom everything is conspiracy. A Lindale TV host is Wayne Alan Root. He's also a Gateway Pundit columnist.

Jim Acosta (1:35)

Oh, yeah. I haven't heard that one in a minute.

Molly Jong-Fast (1:37)

The White House spokesman, Lauren Biss, said this is a real story, and there is evidence of voter fraud. Of course she did. This is really scary and bad. There are so many organizations that are ready to go to court to try and defend our elections. So we're going to see a lot of pushback, thank God. But it's really, really scary, and it's a really scary moment for the rule of law and American democracy. And this is where we are, and it's just unbelievably bad.

Jim Acosta (2:12)

So speaking of the rule of law, there's this fun Gallup poll about how little Americans feel it has any consequences for our higher ups.

Molly Jong-Fast (2:21)

So basically, voters are really, really, really mad, and we see this everywhere. But one of the ways we see it is they're really despairing about what will happen to powerful people, whether powerful people will ever be held accountable. And in this poll, we see that Republicans are also really mad. And this is an amazing poll because it shows that 43 percent of Republicans, not Democrats, not independents, Republicans believe that the rule of law is weaker than it was a decade ago. Okay, that's Republicans. And so if you don't see where that's going, right, that means that there are a pretty good percentage of Republicans who see Trump's corruption for what it is. But the really despairing part of this is that just 28% believe that political leaders will be held accountable. And that, I think, is a big, big deal.

Jim Acosta (3:26)

I really think that the drain the swamp was the beginning of this. But now we're at the thing of that. They've shown, like, whoever trusted that Trump was going to drain the swamp, all of those people have learned that was all fucking con.

Molly Jong-Fast (3:38)

Right. I think that's right. I think we're seeing that. I think people are despairing and I think people are upset, and I think it's a big deal.

Jim Acosta (3:45)

So, Molly, the apple of your eye, RFK Jr., the man that you're his reply gal, I mean.

Molly Jong-Fast (3:51)

Yes, I'm trying to be. It's the first real relationship I've ever had in my life.

Jim Acosta (3:55)

So, it was because when we were in Texas that time, he puffed his chest out at you, and you were just like, yeah, I like what I see.

Molly Jong-Fast (4:01)

I just like a man who works out in jeans and nothing else.

Jim Acosta (4:04)

I do remember what Ellie Honig told us that long before the public knew that, and you and I do that for months before, and we're astounded.

Molly Jong-Fast (4:11)

Yeah, yeah, and we saved it for the book. We never told anyone.

Jim Acosta (4:15)

That's actually not true. We told a lot of people that.

Molly Jong-Fast (4:18)

Yeah, we were like, you can't make him Health and Human Services Secretary. He works out in jeans.

Jim Acosta (4:23)

Okay, but so he took money out of the Office of Minority Health for his own security. Is there any story that could be more just on the course? Yeah, just absolutely. Of course, this is where he eluded from.
