I was in the grocery store and I was in line and I saw a magazine cover. It was the cover of Time. And just in the corner, it said, mothers are saying that they're noticing regression into autism after the MMR shot. My son was due for the MMR the following weeks. So when I went to the doctor's appointment, I said, listen, I'm very concerned. I have a gut feeling my son's not going to be able to handle the shot. He was so dismissive. He was so rude. He literally said to me, don't be one of those mothers. And not too far after that, my son had a seizure and went into cardiac arrest. Soon he lost all of his language right after that. And then he got an autism diagnosis. And I was like, oh, hell no. They told me he's going to have to be institutionalized someday.
They might not ever speak. And I went online and I found an organization that said autism is reversible. And I was like, what?

They turn into morphine in their guts.

In two weeks, he said like two words. After remove the ****.
After two to three years of doing this, the state comes over to reevaluate you for services. They he no longer qualify.

You're listening to The Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey.
Why won't your stress budge no matter what you do? You're doing the work, the cold plunge, the breath work, the supplements, and your nervous system is still running hot. Here's the problem. Every recovery tool you use only works when your body believes the threat is over. And if your nervous system never gets that signal, it stays in survival mode regardless of what you stack on top of it. The direct line to that signal runs through your vagus nerve. When you stimulate it, your parasympathetic nervous system activates. Your body shifts out of fight or flight and into the state where real recovery happens. ZenBud is the tool I reach for to make that shift happen. It sits on your ears like a headset and uses focused ultrasound to reach your vagus nerve directly. Just 5 minutes daily is all you need. In clinical studies, participants experienced significant improvements across stress, mood and sleep after just 4 weeks of use.
Many people notice it in their first session. Check it out at zenbud.health and use code DAVE15 at checkout for a discount. Your biohacks are only as good as your nervous system's ability to recover.
This is the missing piece.
How many nights have you stared at the ceiling, counting the hours until morning? Maybe you tried a sleep supplement, but it knocked you out and left you groggy, like you traded one problem for another. Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired. It kills your performance, slows your brain down and speeds up aging. Kill Switch from Switch Supplements solves that problem. It works with your biology instead of against it. It contains five gut-friendly, extensively researched ingredients like GABA, magnesium glycinate and tart cherry extract to help you fall asleep naturally, stay asleep and wake up clear. And it's in the form of a delicious, sugar-free, no BS hot cocoa drink. Sleep tracking data proves how well it works. People consistently hit 90 plus sleep scores and more than double their REM sleep in only three days with Kill Switch. If you're ready for the best sleep of your life, order now at switchsupplements.com and use code DAVE for 20% off. If you don't sleep better, you get your money back. Kill Switch works with your biology. Your body does the rest.
This episode of The Human Upgrade is with none other than Jenny McCarthy, who is an actress, comedian, and judge on The Masked Singer for 14 years.
**Jenny McCarthy** (3:43)
Yeah.
**Dave Asprey** (3:44)
And you could say, Dave, why are you interviewing one of these celebrities? What do they know?
**Jenny McCarthy** (3:50)
That's what I usually say about celebrities too. So.
**Dave Asprey** (3:54)
But this is really interesting because we're going to talk about autism.
And we're going to talk about brain function. And yeah, we'll touch on some celebrity topics about like, how do you survive in a studio and just the lifestyle and the things that you do to make your brain work.
But this is really about autism and autism awareness. Jenny is the mother of an autistic son who's doing well. So let's go deep on this. And for context, I guess if you are new to the show, I used to have autism and I don't meet the clinical criteria anymore, but I still don't have a normal brain. And we'll talk about that too. Jenny, welcome.
