Today is October 6th. Alright, so the Islanders spaced off against the Rangers in a heated battle for New York last night. They couldn't keep their winning streak alive, losing 5-2 in Game 1 of the season.
It's definitely a tough start after dominating the series last season. The Rangers took control early, thanks to Oliver Bjorkstrand and Alexis Lafreniere, who went off with a hat trick.
That's got to feel good for him, especially getting those goals to pad the score late in the game. The Islanders did manage to tie things up in a second period with goals from Bo Horvitt and Cal Ricci, which showed some resilience. But honestly, they just couldn't capitalize on their chances. They hit the post three times, and you know how frustrating that can be. Head coach Peter DeBoer pulled Semyon Varlamov late in the game to try and shake things up. But instead of a comeback, Lafreniere added two empty netters, making the score look worse than it was. It's a game of inches, and last night, those inches didn't go their way.
On a positive note, Varlamov made it through his first start in nearly two years without any issues. He had 19 saves and looks solid out there. Getting him back on the ice with the team is huge, and they'll be looking to bounce back in the next matchup for sure. I'm Corey with the story. That's your New York Rangers News Today update.
