It's October 7th. Alright, so The New York Islanders faced off against The New York Rangers in a highly anticipated opener, but it didn't quite go their way. They lost 5-2 in a game that was more competitive than the score suggests. Those empty net goals at the end really changed the narrative. Then there's Alexis Lafreniere, who stole the show with a hat trick. He scored two of those goals in the final moments, making it look like a blowout when it really was a closer contest. Gotta respect the kid for stepping up in a big rivalry game.

Also on the scoring front was Oliver Bjorkstrand, who netted two goals. His explosive performance, along with Lafreniere's, made for a tough night for the Islanders.

They had some chances to keep it close though, tying the game twice after falling behind early. Meanwhile, the Islanders had plenty of opportunities hitting the post three times. If just one of those had gone in, we could be looking at a different outcome. It's a harsh reminder that in hockey it's often a game of inches. On the bright side, Semyon Varlamov returned to the ice after nearly two years away. He saved 19 of 22 shots, which is a solid return for him.

While they didn't snag a win, seeing him back out there is definitely a win for the team. That's your New York Rangers News Today update, AI powered and always on.
