Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Hi, and welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real scientists answer your beauty questions and give you an insider's look at the beauty product industry. This is episode number 198 I'm your host, Valerie George, and joining me today is my cohost, Perry Romanowski. Hi, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:29)

Hello, Valerie.

Valerie George (0:31)

Are you excited for today's show?

Perry Romanowski (0:34)

I am, we've got lots of questions today. Are you excited about the show?

Valerie George (0:39)

I am. We're gonna do something a little different today. The audience knows how much I love audio questions, so today we're gonna do a show featuring all questions by people who submitted them through audio.

Perry Romanowski (0:52)

Ah, that is awesome. Love to hear the audio questions.

So what do we got on the show today?

Valerie George (0:58)

Today, we had a question about Lucas's pawpaw ointment. We'll see what that's about. What the heck does the term cosmostutical mean? Does nail polish increase nail growth? What's the deal about copper peptides? And, Shakaki, does it belong in your hair?

I don't even know if I said that right.

Perry Romanowski (1:22)

Well, we'll hear how it sounds on the audio.

Valerie George (1:24)

Well, hopefully they'll pronounce it correctly. So I do want to apologize in advance if you hear any background noise. I am home alone with my dogs. I don't know if everyone knows this, but my one dog had cancer. He's doing much better through treatment and surgery and stuff. And I forgot how annoying he is when he feels his best. So he's an absolute savage running around in the background.

Perry Romanowski (1:50)

So every so often we'll hear the nails clicking on the floor there.

Valerie George (1:54)

The nails clicking, him crying. Yeah, he's ultra needy today.

Perry Romanowski (1:57)

Well, that's all right. I'm sure he'll sit and listen to our wonderful show.

Valerie George (2:03)

And think, that's mommy.

Perry Romanowski (2:06)

Yeah.

Valerie George (2:06)

I saw you had some snow in Chicago this week.

Perry Romanowski (2:09)

Well, you know, we just had Halloween, which was lots of fun Halloween. I did go to a Halloween costume party, and I dressed up as a magician, just so I could do these magic tricks that I know was so dorky. But I was enjoying it. It is, yeah.

Yes, but here in Chicago, we had snow on Halloween. So now I have this big bucket of candy left that I was gonna hand out, but now I've just been eating.

Valerie George (2:33)

Yeah, that's the way to do it, keep a bunch for yourself. In Los Angeles, we don't exactly have winter, but we have wildfire season. So that was in full effect this week. So I've been hiding a bit indoors.

Perry Romanowski (2:44)

That's right. Do you do anything special for your skin to prevent the pollution from the wildfire?

Valerie George (2:52)

No.

Perry Romanowski (2:55)

I'll cut that out.

Valerie George (2:56)

No, you don't have to, it's okay.

I mean, when people think of, you know, skincare and big cities, they're thinking anti-pollution, protecting the skin with a film. Most people aren't thinking, is your city burning down? What kind of protection do you have for that? I mean, maybe that's a white space in the market, and I could create my own line.

Perry Romanowski (3:18)

I think there is an opportunity there.

Valerie George (3:23)

Oh, so sad. Well, it is under control, and kudos to the Los Angeles Fire Department for working so diligently to put it out.

It's a really rough time, and people did lose their homes, all joking aside. So hopefully, they can have some assistance to get taken care of this holiday season as we go into it.

Perry Romanowski (3:45)

Absolutely, absolutely.

Valerie George (3:47)

Well, I did want to make a correction from a few episodes ago where we were talking about sunscreen efficacy, and I did state verbally on the podcast that in the United States, when they measure sunscreen efficacy, they take 2 grams per centimeter squared for a sunscreen application, and I did misspeak on the units. It's 2 milligrams per centimeter squared.

The reverse is a lot of product, and so I do apologize. I wanted to thank our loyal listener for pointing that out.

There is nothing new. That is the method. I just made an error. It's really hard when we're doing this, and we're talking, and our minds are so far ahead of our mouths. We do make mistakes from time to time, and we thank everyone for letting us know when we do make them and don't catch them so that we can make the correction.
