Is it still possible for young people in the UK to become homeowners?

Do you really know?

October 20, 2026

In the UK, owning a home is still seen as a key sign of financial stability. For many, it means security against life’s uncertainties - job loss, illness, or income drops and a way to build long-term wealth instead of paying rent.

Chronic migraine, 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more, can make me feel like a spectator in my own life.

Botox, Anabotulinum toxin A, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It's not for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. It's the number one prescribed branded chronic migraine preventive treatment.

SPEAKER_3 (0:17)

Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions, including ALS Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and medications, including botulinum toxins, as these may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Is it still possible for young people in the UK to become homeowners?

Thanks for asking. In the UK, owning a home is still seen as a keen sign of financial stability. For many, it means security against life's uncertainties, job loss, illness or income drops and a way to build long-term wealth instead of paying rent. Today, according to the comparison site Finder, the average age of the first-time buyer is just under 34 In London, it's closer to 35 That's several years older than in the 1990s, when most first-time buyers were in their late 20s.

So why has it become so complicated to buy now?

The main issue is affordability. House prices have far outpaced wages. According to the Office for National Statistics, the average home in England costs 7.7 times the average annual salary. In London, it's over 11 times. This makes saving for a deposit extremely challenging. In 2004, Finder reported that first-time buyers were putting down an average of 61,000 pounds, a huge sum for those early in their careers. As a result, mortgages are stretching further. Many buyers are now taking out 30 or 35-year terms instead of the traditional 25, just to keep payments manageable. What about young people specifically? The job market plays a big role. Young workers are more likely to face unemployment or insecure work. In mid-2025, the unemployment rate for 16 to 24-year-olds was nearly 14%, about three times higher than for older age groups, according to Statistia.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that nearly 1 million young people were neat, not in education, employment or training at the start of 2024 Even those in stable jobs often find that wages haven't kept pace with housing costs. So is it possible for young people in the UK to become homeowners? Yes, but it's harder. Homeownership has become less accessible for the middle class, especially those relying on income rather than inherited wealth. It now often requires years of saving, long mortgage terms and compromises on size or location. For those without family support, it can feel increasingly out of reach. There you have it.

Now you know if it's still possible for young people in the UK to become homeowners. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you really will know for sure.
