You are listening to The Beauty Brains, where real scientists answer your beauty questions. And now, here's Randy and Perry.
Perry Romanowski (0:18)
Hello, I'm Perry Romanowski, and with me as always, my beauty blogging bro, Randy Schuller. Hey, Randy, welcome to Show 104
Randy Schuller (0:28)
Hi, Perry. Hi to our vast listening audience. Hey, I want to give a special quick thank you to Mary Ellen for recording the intro to the show today, especially thanking her for putting my name before Perry's.
And if you guys out there in the audience want to hear your voice on the show, all you have to do is record our intro on your smartphone and just e-mail it to us at thebeautybrains.gmail.com.
Perry Romanowski (0:53)
Yeah, that's excellent. Well, speaking of excellent, we have a fabulously packed show today. In today's show, you're going to learn about whether blotting skin will reduce sunscreen effectiveness, if it's safe to use fabric softener on hair, whether there is a less irritating alternative to shaving cream, and all you need to know about ionic hair buyers.
Plus, we're going to cover some of those beauty science stories that we found interesting over the last week. But first, let's revisit something that we talked about last show. Remember last show, one of our iTunes reviewers said that they loved us, they were gushing, but we sounded like two dads who sort it in.
Randy Schuller (1:35)
Something like that, yeah, I recall that.
Perry Romanowski (1:38)
Well, interestingly enough, I stumbled on this article in the New Zealand Herald, which goes through a bunch of beauty terms and trends, and I thought it would be helpful and educational for both us and our audience to go through some of these. So, let's see which one of these things that you've heard about or haven't heard about.
Randy Schuller (1:56)
Okay, so these are things that you think our audience would expect us to know, or this is new and startling information for them as well?
Perry Romanowski (2:04)
These are things that people, beauty bloggers, probably should know about.
Randy Schuller (2:07)
Okay, so I'm in trouble right now, I can tell you, but let's try it.
Perry Romanowski (2:10)
No, no, here's this, you should know most of these. Here's argan oil, you've heard of argan oil.
Randy Schuller (2:14)
Oh, sure, yeah, Jason and the Argonauts, yes, I've heard of them.
Perry Romanowski (2:18)
Argan oil. Well, we wrote about argan oil way back in the day with the goats on the trees and things. Okay, how about belayage?
Belayage is...
Randy Schuller (2:28)
Right, she's the singer who did Lemonade, I know. Okay, move on, next one.
Perry Romanowski (2:32)
No, it's a freestyle highlighting of your hair, so you highlight your hair and just freestyle. All right, how about contouring?
Randy Schuller (2:39)
Kanye, he's the husband of the other one, yeah, okay.
Perry Romanowski (2:43)
Now contouring is using a powder to change your facial structure. All right, have you heard of duct tape tits?
Randy Schuller (2:51)
What?
Perry Romanowski (2:53)
What? Well, Kim Kardashian uses duct tape to hold them down for her red carpet looks.
She posted a picture on Instagram. All right, have you heard this term fleek?
Randy Schuller (3:05)
I haven't even heard Instagram. What do you mean? What is fleek?
Perry Romanowski (3:10)
Fleek, this is the term that means it looks great. So, you know, it's not related to twerking. It's fleek. So, if something is on fleek, that means it just really looks great. Yeah, yeah, exactly. The 60s called.
All right, how about instant shampoo slash conditioner?
Randy Schuller (3:30)
Yeah, well, like dry shampoo, instant shampoo.
Perry Romanowski (3:32)
Right, exactly.
Randy Schuller (3:33)
We've written about that.
Perry Romanowski (3:34)
And, you know, jojoba oil is a big deal.
Randy Schuller (3:36)
Especially around Christmas time. Jojoba, sure.
Perry Romanowski (3:40)
I can't believe it. I mean, we were using it in the early 90s.
Randy Schuller (3:42)
Oh, yeah, that's old school.
Perry Romanowski (3:43)
All right, how about Kajal? K-A-J-A-L.
Randy Schuller (3:48)
Oh, yeah, it's the black pigment used in certain Indian eye makeup.
Perry Romanowski (3:53)
Right, it's a fancy way to say eyeliner. Just a few more. So, lob.
Lob is a quick way to say long bob. Apparently, it's a portmanteau.
Randy Schuller (4:04)
Isn't that a suitcase? No.
Perry Romanowski (4:08)
How about neathage?
Randy Schuller (4:09)
Neathage? It would be revealing your neath, I guess.
Perry Romanowski (4:13)
Yeah, the underside of your breasts.
Randy Schuller (4:16)
Oh, I was just being clever.
Perry Romanowski (4:18)
It's the opposite of cleavage.
Just a couple more. Vajazel.
Randy Schuller (4:25)
