This is Kyle Worley and I'm joined by my co-host, Jen Wilkin and JT English. Good morning. How are we both doing?
Jen Wilkin (2:17)
I just always wonder, what happens if producer Brad ever decides to release all of the outtakes from this?
Kyle Worley (2:23)
It's not good.
We have so many Freudian slips, you might say, so many slips to the tongue. Jen's mentioning that because right before this, I introduced them both as I'm joined by my, I didn't say co-host, I meant to say co-host and I said another word. I'm not going to tell you the word. It wasn't incredibly inappropriate or something. This was not the right way to introduce.
Jen Wilkin (2:47)
I think you were trying to say cohort.
Kyle Worley (2:49)
Yes. Right? Right. But you didn't articulate it. I kind of blended co-host and cohort and it came out.
Jen Wilkin (2:55)
It was bad. It didn't work.
Kyle Worley (2:56)
It was not good. It was not great. Not a great introduction to this episode, and we do want a good introduction to this episode because this is an important topic. Last season, this season, we've been covering tricky topics and thorny questions. The goal for all of this is that oftentimes we kind of, like Jen might say, there's a lot of feelings-level discussions that we have in our current cultural moment. JT has written in Remember and Rehearse about stories, and certainly one of the most prevalent stories in our current world is just the story of romanticism. Whatever I feel to be true is true, and listen, the Bible wants to dignify how we feel. It gives us a tapestry of a rich emotional life, but we want to stand on truth as we consider how we feel about things, so we do want to take some topics and some questions and explore them kind of in light of what God's word has to say. This is our foundation, even when all the lights go out, we can stand on these truths because we've considered them and we've meditated and we've thought about them. And so today we're turning our attention to a question that really does need biblical and theological grounding, and the question is, is divorce sin? That's the question.
And so I want to get right into the topic today. And I want to acknowledge at the top that for some of you, this is, for some of our listeners, this is a really personal question. There's a lot of your own story or the story of the family that you grew up in that's tied to this. This might be something that you're going through right now. It might be something you're giving serious consideration to. And so we want to deal with it for what it is, which is a really serious question. And it's a really thoughtful question.
We want to ground it in that kind of sobriety and sober mindedness. So if it sounds like in this episode, there's a little less jocularity than there normally is, I can promise you the banter will come raging back in the next episode. But for this one, we're going to just try to get into it, see what the Bible has to say about this, and give us some good theological categories that we can use when maybe the volume turns up on conflict or confusion or disruption or real breach, which sometimes happens, unfortunately, in a broken world.
