You're listening to The Beauty Brains Show, where real scientists answer your beauty questions. And now, here's Randy and Perry.
Randy Schuller (0:17)
Hello, everybody, I'm Randy Schuller.
Perry Romanowski (0:20)
And I'm Perry Romanowski.
Randy Schuller (0:22)
And we're here to welcome you to episode, like, 148, I think, of this show.
Perry Romanowski (0:28)
I think it's 147, I think.
Randy Schuller (0:30)
Well, you know, if you don't count the reruns we've been playing while we were on summer break, I think it's like episode 142 But who's counting?
Perry Romanowski (0:37)
Hey, that was quite a vacation that we had.
Randy Schuller (0:39)
Well, I don't want to, I don't, like, we could spend the whole show just recapping that, and I don't really want to get into the details, and I don't want to talk about where we went, really, but it was in the south, and it was warm, and there was a beach.
Perry Romanowski (0:52)
All I know is I'm still trying to get sand out of places that I don't want to talk about.
Randy Schuller (0:56)
All right, well, anyway, enough of our personal lives. Why don't we kick off the show with our beauty science news?
Perry Romanowski (1:04)
Oh, sure. Well, I can start with my first story.
You know, since this is sort of a southern theme, I have a weird beauty trend story coming out of Latin America.
Randy Schuller (1:18)
Oh, okay. I'm not saying we went to Latin America.
Perry Romanowski (1:20)
It's just south, right?
Randy Schuller (1:23)
Yeah, just south. Southern-ish, but okay, go ahead.
Perry Romanowski (1:26)
So it turns out that women are getting scorpion manicures.
Randy Schuller (1:31)
No, they're not.
Perry Romanowski (1:33)
No, no, not that their scorpions are giving them manicures. What happens is they're getting manicures and they glue tiny scorpions on to the nails.
Randy Schuller (1:44)
You mean like freeze-dried scorpions or what?
Perry Romanowski (1:47)
Well, they're dead.
According to the story published in The Daily Mail, it started out as a joke by one beauty parlor in Mexico, and it just kind of caught on from there. They were having a scorpion theme day at the salon and had this crazy idea to glue dead baby scorpions to people's nails.
Randy Schuller (2:08)
Weren't you in a band called Dead Baby Scorpions?
Perry Romanowski (2:11)
No, but I will be. Well, it turns out they posted a video on their Facebook page and it went viral.
And then this led to people all across North America to come visit this salon to get their manicure with dead baby scorpions attached to their nails. Now, just in case you weren't, before they apply them, they kill the tiny insects with bug spray. But the things still have their, they still have stingers and venom in there. They're just dead.
Randy Schuller (2:42)
So no scorpions are harmed in the making of these nail polishes?
Perry Romanowski (2:45)
No, the scorpions are harmed. Now it's-
Randy Schuller (2:50)
PETA, PETA, news to PETA.
Perry Romanowski (2:52)
Well, you know, incidentally, I did search for comments from PETA and there was nothing. They had nothing about these poor scorpions. It turns out no one is looking out for the ethical treatment of scorpions.
Randy Schuller (3:06)
Well, we are now, I guess.
Perry Romanowski (3:08)
Well, in case you were wondering, it's highly unlikely you're going to get the venom into your bloodstream when it's put on the top of your nails. So there's actually, I did track down the video. I actually did a little work for the show.
Randy Schuller (3:20)
There's a first.
Perry Romanowski (3:22)
So I tracked down the video and we'll have a link in the show notes, but you can see exactly how they put the little tiny scorpions on the nail and then they glue over the top of it and polish it.
Randy Schuller (3:34)
And what if you bite your nails? That's a problem.
Perry Romanowski (3:37)
Don't bite it near the stinger end.
Randy Schuller (3:41)
Very good. Good story.
Hey, you know, I'm always on the lookout for stories that intersect two of my greatest passions, right? Beauty science and comic books.
Perry Romanowski (3:52)
Of course. I remember that first show we did where we talked about comic book heroes who were cosmetic chemists, right?
Randy Schuller (3:59)
Exactly. Or villains or whatever the bit was. But anyway, well, I just saw that the brand Magic Shave, they've teamed up with Marvel Comics to do this media program around, you know, their shaving lotions or whatever, using the hero Luke Cage.
Perry Romanowski (4:13)
Oh, Luke. Sure. He's got a new show coming out on Netflix, right?
