Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains.

Thank Welcome to The Beauty Brains, a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 210 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is my co-host, Perry Romanowski. Hi, Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:28)

Hello, Valerie, great to be here.

Valerie George (0:30)

I'm so glad to be back. Thanks so much for doing that solo show last week.

Perry Romanowski (0:34)

Oh, it's fun. But not nearly as fun as when we're together, virtually anyway.

Valerie George (0:41)

Well, we've got a fully packed program today. We'll be covering a couple of cosmetic science news stories, catching up from my hiatus, and answering questions about, is silicone suffocating hair and causing hair loss? Do proteins and nail products strengthen nails?

What is goat's milk doing in soaps and more? What's an affordable version of SkinCeutical's Triple Lipid Restore? And is Bakukyol safe during pregnancy? But first, let's talk about the last couple weeks.

Perry Romanowski (1:10)

Right, we were in LA together. Well, that was quite a little trip we had, or I had.

Valerie George (1:15)

Yeah, it was so great to see you.

We did our first Beauty Brains meetup. Perry and I met a couple fans down in downtown LA. It was so awesome to see everyone that came out and to meet our fans in person. And then the next night, I got to see you a second time.

Perry Romanowski (1:33)

Right, it was the Sustainable Beauty Panel. And there were over 100 people there, and it was kind of an industry kind of thing, but we got to talk about whether beauty products are sustainable. And you know, it occurred to me during that whole sustainability talk and listening to all the people talk about their sustainability efforts, the one main point about sustainability that never got emphasized very much is that it's easy to be sustainable. These companies could easily be more sustainable. Just stop selling so much.

You can just reduce the amount that you make by just not selling as much. Nobody ever seems to take that sustainability route.

Valerie George (2:16)

No, I mentioned to someone at work the other day that if people were really interested in preventing the damage that the cosmetics industry does to the environment and energy consumption, they would just not use cosmetic products at all.

Perry Romanowski (2:31)

You wouldn't even need to move to like water-free or bottle-free.

You just don't buy that bottle. You know what? Shampoo your head every other day. So there you go.

Valerie George (2:42)

Yeah, exactly.

Perry Romanowski (2:43)

50% cut down.

Valerie George (2:45)

Well, to our fans, if you're interested in watching the panel that Perry was on and that I got to watch in person, it will be posted on the EcoWell account. The EcoWell is another industry podcast that focuses on green and sustainable beauty in our industry, and you'll be able to watch the panel on there.

Perry Romanowski (3:03)

Yeah, that'll be fun. You can see what everyone had to say about sustainable beauty.

Valerie George (3:09)

Yeah, well, let's move on to some beauty science news.

Perry Romanowski (3:17)

Valerie, I saw that you got contacted by this story, but I got contacted a few times about this diva curl story.

Valerie George (3:27)

Oh gosh, the biggest news this week is diva curl making people's hair fall out.

Perry Romanowski (3:34)

It seems so strange, though. Sometimes this happens where there's a story. I remember it with the Jaclyn Hill story, where we got contacted by a whole bunch of people, like, hey, what do you think of this?

And it seems very weird that people directly contact us about this. I'm a little suspicious of that, but it was an interesting story, so I looked into it, and I know that you looked into it, too.

Valerie George (3:58)

Yeah, well, it's all over social media.

Perry Romanowski (4:01)

It is, definitely is. So I looked at the diva curl products, and based on their marketing, on some level, I say, this kind of backlash serves you right.

I mean, I look at their marketing, they were totally fear mongers. I mean, they claim to be free of the harsh ingredients, as if everyone else's products are harsh or dangerous to use. And then, of course, they were one of the no-sulfates, or no-parabens, and no-silicones, no-thalates-mineral-gluten-free, all that other free-from-BS that I think really damages the industry. So, while maybe they're being unfairly treated here, I say it really couldn't happen to a nicer brand.
