Hello, and welcome to the Apple Insider Podcast. I'm your host, Wesley Hilliard speaking. I'm joined once again by William Gallagher. I can't do any of those cool, cold open things where we just jump right in. That's, I would get so confused. So I'm just gonna say Apple Insider Plus, that is your ad free version of the show. You won't hear anything about ads. We're gonna be talking about digital versus physical for good reason. I mentioned it last week, PlayStation ditching their physical games. And the whole conversation around that, we talked about how we manage digital versus physical a year or two ago. I figured it was a good time to bring it back and discuss this topic at hand a little bit deeper. But William, how are you doing today? Is it still pretty hot over there?

Oh, it's extremely hot. It's 33 Celsius here. I don't know what that is in your weird money there, but it's hot and I'm perplexed. Also, I'll just throw it out here. I feel robbed. Apple Creator Studio, Updates to Final Cut Pro, Send a Frame to Pixelmator Pro?
Not here. You can't. Fine. Is that some American only thing? I don't know. Anyway, that's my problem. But otherwise I'm fine. Thank you. How are you?

I'm good. I'm thinking about existentialism and time because we all have to go one day and what we leave behind is important, William.
I was wondering, this is a good way to start the show. Have you ever participated in opening or sealing a time capsule?

**William Gallagher** (1:32)
Oh, I see. Good side. No idea where that was going.
Not directly, but I did work at BBC Television Center where Blue Peter, a famous chun show here, they buried it. So I could look out of the canteen down at the garden and know that's where it was buried and it was later moved. Oh, and there's a Scottish comedy called The Scott Squad, which is a wonderful thing of the main character being invited to open a time capsule from the 1970s. And it was superbly done because every item was worse than before with people you do not want to celebrate anymore. Possibly shouldn't mention them. We'll find a link for it. But other than that, my hands have never got dirty. No, I think yours have, haven't they?

I've been around for a few time capsules. Our elementary school did one, which is amusing, of course, because the stuff you put in there, Pokemon cards, things like that, in the 90s.
When I was in the nuclear power program, it was time to open the time capsule that was put in by Admiral Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy. It was a running joke that he was going to be in the time capsule, frozen or something, and come back. So this is zombie Admiral Rickover. Always fun. The reason why I bring this up is because we're doing an America 250th anniversary, ha ha, we win Britain, whatever, thing, and we're doing a time capsule that will be open in 250 years from now. Apple provided an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

With a warranty that, you know, still.

Do you think it's orange?

**William Gallagher** (3:14)
Well, any way to get rid of one more orange iPhone is good, but I assume after a quarter of a century, it might have degraded into a decent color. So, you know, small moves.

**Wesley Hilliard** (3:26)
Do you think the battery would last 250 years?

**William Gallagher** (3:30)
Well, you might need recharging every now and again, but, you know, bung an anchor thing in there or something.

**Wesley Hilliard** (3:37)
I would have to assume they put a model in without a battery, right? Cause that sounds dangerous. Like what if the whole thing just combusts?

**William Gallagher** (3:44)
Oh, but that's terrible. In 250 years, people get this out and it doesn't do anything. Literally doesn't and cannot do anything.

**Wesley Hilliard** (3:52)
So this isn't my joke, so I'm gonna steal it. In 250 years, the EU will still mandate USB-C charging. So all they'll need to do is plug it in.

**William Gallagher** (4:01)
Of course, the thing is, we all think that timecapsules are supposed to have good things in them, but do you know the story of the one that was buried in America for the 100th anniversary of the US?

**Wesley Hilliard** (4:11)
No.

**William Gallagher** (4:12)
Well, time came for it to be opened and about, so what, it would have been 1976, the 200th anniversary, is that right? Something like that.
