Okay, our friends, so today we are reading a classic.
Philip (0:14)
It is a classic, and I am actually quite surprised that I have not read it before, but it was brought to my attention that I have, in fact, not read this book, and I thought I had, and I looked back through my files, and sure enough, I don't see it in there.
Lisa Bueno (0:28)
So forgive me, my friends, for having dropped the ball on this masterpiece for as many years as I've been doing the stories. So let's jump right into it. Grab your copy out, snuggle down, get your blankets wrapped around you, get your glass of milk and your cookie, because you're going to need it for today's story. It is called If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
And the story was written by Laura Numeroff, and it's illustrated by Felicia Bond, and it's read today by Mommy, and...
Philip (1:11)
Ooh, so you're brr brr and brr brr.
Lisa Bueno (1:15)
So it sounds to me like you're some sort of horn.
Philip (1:18)
Are you from the horn section?
Lisa Bueno (1:21)
Are you brass? What, are you a tuba?
Philip (1:26)
No, a trumpet. Are you a tuba trumpet?
Lisa Bueno (1:33)
There it is, my friends, a tuba trumpet.
Philip (1:38)
And that's about all you can ask for.
Lisa Bueno (1:40)
Now, let us read. Are you ready? Okay. So when we open the book, we see a boy, and he's sitting out in front of his house, it looks like, and he's eating cookies, and he sees a mouse. And it says, if you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk.
And so the boy takes him inside and pours him a glass of milk. What a kind boy. When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw.
Well, that makes sense. And when he's finished, he'll ask for a napkin.
Philip (2:24)
Naturally, because you don't want to walk around with a milk mustache, right?
Lisa Bueno (2:28)
Then he'll want to look in the mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache. When he looks in the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim.
So he'll probably ask for a pair of nail scissors.
Philip (2:44)
Now, it is a little bit weird to go into someone's house and cut your hair. But, I don't know, he's a mouse.
Lisa Bueno (2:51)
Maybe he doesn't have the same kind of manners that we do. When he's finished giving himself a trim, he'll want a broom to sweep up. Well, that's kind of him.
And he'll start sweeping. He might get carried away and sweep every room in the house. He may even end up washing the floors as well.
Philip (3:18)
I would have him come into my house then.
Lisa Bueno (3:20)
When he's done, he'll probably want to take a nap.
Philip (3:23)
No doubt.
Lisa Bueno (3:24)
He's probably exhausted. You'll have to fix up a little box for him with a blanket and a pillow. He'll crawl in and make himself comfortable and love the pillow a few times. And he'll probably ask you to read him a story. Well, after he's cleaned my floors, I wouldn't have a problem with that, would you? Yeah. So you'll read to him from one of your books and he'll ask to see the pictures. And the picture, we can see the boy is doing that. It looks like he's got some sort of comic book, right? When he looks at the pictures, he'll get so excited. He'll want to draw one of his own. He'll ask for paper and crayons.
And he'll draw a picture.
And in the picture, we see him doing just that, right?
Philip (4:24)
Whoa, he's a great artist.
Lisa Bueno (4:27)
When the picture is finished, he'll want to sign his name. My goodness.
In the picture, what has he done? What has he done?
He's drawn his home with his mom and his dad and his sister and his brother, it looks like. He'll want to sign his name with a pen. Then he'll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator, which means he'll need scotch tape. And he'll hang up his drawing and stand back to look at it and looking at the refrigerator will remind him that he's thirsty. Which makes sense, because he did after all. Do all that stuff.
Philip (5:19)
Do all that stuff.
Lisa Bueno (5:21)
But guess who else is tired?
Philip (5:25)
The little boy, right?
