I Skipped Hall of Fame Game for Caitlin Clark — Blame Maria Taylor and The Odyssey | Ep 1213

Fearless with Jason Whitlock

August 7, 2026

Jason Whitlock skipped the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game for Caitlin Clark and Aces-Fever — because Maria Taylor is NBC’s welcome mat, not football’s. Hall of Fame weekend used to feel like church.

I skipped Mike Tomlin's first night in the broadcast booth, Panthers Cardinals. Sunday Night Football on Thursday night, the Hall of Fame weekend, sitting on my calendar like an old friend I used to know.
Yeah, and I put on Aces-Fever and Caitlin Clark instead. Go ahead, load the cannons. Whitlock abandoned football, Whitlock's wussified, Whitlock chose the feminist, Whitlock would rather watch the WNBA than real sports. Guilty of all of them. I'm not hiding. I'm explaining with a smile, if you're paying close attention, why the hottest product beat the dishonest one, why I put wax in my ears on the biggest studio night of the young NFL calendar, and why Maria Taylor is the reason the rope around the mast subtly makes sense.

There's that fire. Grab your popcorn.

Yep, I used to treat Hall of Fame weekend like church. Saturday was the induction, Sunday was the game, and during the game, the network would slow down and let the speeches breathe. You heard your heroes talk about blocking sleds and broken hands and the men who raised them. It wasn't content. It was communion. The Hall of Fame game wasn't must-see competitive football. It was a parade float for the men who built the thing you loved. As a kid, that was enough. That was holy. Now, they open the preseason on a random Thursday like a product launch, and the weekend that used to feel sacred gets treated like spare inventory. Exhibition football on Hall of Fame weekend is not the point. Never was. The studio show is the point. The welcome mat, the face that greets the country and says, this is still your game. Come on in.
That's why skipping last night wasn't about the Panthers Cardinals. It wasn't even about Mike Tomlin learning a new craft on live television. Respect to him for walking into a different kind of fire. It was about the NBC set and sat in that chair, and what that chair now sells.
Maria Taylor, when I think of Howard Cosell and Chris Berman and James Brown and Brett Musburger and Greg Gumbel and Jim Nance and Keith Jackson and Al Michaels and Frank Gifford, even Kurt Menafee, those are men. Those are football signals.
This, what they did last night, it kind of reminded me of Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan just dragged Homer into the multiplex, the Odyssey.
Matt Damon is Odysseus, not the Marvel quip machine, not the guy cracking jokes between explosions. This is the man who spent 10 years trying to get home to Ithaca after the war. Cursed, tested, hunted by gods who treat human beings like dice on a table. Nolan's version is big, dark, and patient. It assumes you're smart enough to sit with a story older than your country. It does not rush the mythology, and neither will I. Because the movie only works if you understand the trap, and then it gives you the scene everybody paid for. The ship is closing in on the sirens. Odysseus has already been warned.
These are not backup singers. In the myth, the sirens are beautiful, deadly deceivers, half women, half bird, and the old tellings, whose voices promise one thing every traveler wants, knowledge, pleasure, destiny. The secret of the universe wraps in a melody so sweet, your brain shuts off and your hands take the wheel.
Sailors don't die because the song is ugly. They die because the song is perfect. They steer toward the music. The whole kisses the rocks nobody saw under the foam. Men drown. In some versions, what reaches the shore gets eaten.
The song doesn't look like murder. The song looks like destiny. That's the whole con. So Odysseus does the only same thing a leader can do when the danger is also the desire. He orders his crew to plug their ears with wax. They will row deaf. They will not be seduced. But he wants to hear it. He wants the truth of the temptation without paying the full price. So he has them lash him to the mast, rope on the wrist, rope on the chest. No chance of grabbing the rudder when the fever hits. The ship passes. The song starts. Odysseus rages, begs, twists, promises the moon to whoever will untie him. The men can't hear him. They just row. And because he planned for his own weakness, everybody lives.
That is not a cartoon. That is a warning dressed up as prestige cinema.
Now look at professional sports in 2026 and tell me we don't need wax and rope. The WNBA named one of its new franchises, the Cleveland Sirens.
They're not even winking. They're not bearing the lead in a mission statement. They put the man killers from the Greek mythology on the jersey and sold the merch. Half bird, half woman creatures whose job in the story is to lure men toward a wreck. A league that markets itself as a feminist project looked at the most famous female predators in Western literature and said, yes, that's the brand. That's bold, that's direct, that's honest branding. I don't have to agree with the mission to respect the clarity. The WNBA tells you who it is before tip off. Last night, their studio side looked like their product. Swin Cash, Cynthia Cooper, Teresa Weatherspoon, Lindsey Harding, Candice Parker on Color Commentary, some random black dude on Play by Play.
