How To Sail Around the World
How Success Happens
September 16, 2026

I wrote an entire book called This Day in History for Kids. 365 days, 365 stories. I dug up something for every single one of them. So yes, I can confidently tell you that on November 30th, 1954, a woman in Alabama was hit by a small meteorite that crashed through her ceiling while she was napping. She was okay, don't worry. Now, what I cannot tell you under oath is when my next dentist appointment is. That information does not exist in my brain, which is exactly why I am pumped our new sponsor is Skylight Calendar. This all-in-one digital smart calendar syncs seamlessly with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and more, giving you customizable views for daily, weekly or monthly planning. You'll be able to manage events, chores and grocery lists while assigning colors for each of your family members and eliminating excuses of not knowing what they needed to do. Families are better when they're working together. Right now, Skylight is offering our listeners $30 off their 15-inch calendars by going to myskylight.com/success. Go to myskylight.com/success for $30 off your 15-inch calendar. That's myskylight.com/success.
So here's a little peek behind the How Success Happens curtain. Every other week, we have a production meeting with the entire team. I'm sorry to report that most of that meeting is not spent telling me how great I am or announcing our upcoming slate of awesome guests. Rather, most of the meeting is about boring logistics. And thanks to Granola, I can tune out from time to time because if I miss something, well, Granola has my back. Granola is an AI-powered notepad built for the way real people actually meet. So here's how it works. You take rough notes like you normally would, and in the background, Granola securely transcribes the meeting. Then it turns everything into clean, structured, actually useful notes when the meeting ends. And the best part, Granola works through your device's audio, which means it integrates seamlessly into the video conferencing tools you're already using. So no setup, no awkward bots, it's just your normal meeting with superpowers. You get to actually listen during your meeting instead of frantically typing away every word, and then you walk away knowing exactly what was decided, who's doing what, and what comes next. If meetings are eating up your day, Granola is an absolute no-brainer, and you can try it totally free. Just head to granola.ai/successhappens.
That's granola.ai/successhappens to get your time back. Try it for free at granola.ai/successhappens.
And I have to ask you about the moment where you go flying across, and I think you cracked a rib or two.

I was in a pretty gnarly sea state, and the boat approached, and the breaking wave pushed the boat over 90, and I was thrown across the boat.
We had the footage of me being flung across the boat, and every time I watched it, I would be like laughing, but also crying, because it looked fake. And the boat's just sailing a lot, like as if nothing happened. The boat's like, okay, you're fine, like I'm gonna keep sailing. And I'm over here, like, can't, I pulled a ligament in my wrist, so now I'm like, oh wow, I am broken. And this is only like the first month.
Dan Bova (3:44)
Hey, everyone, welcome to How Success Happens. I'm Dan Bova, writer and editor at entrepreneur.com.
And I want to be a little honest with you. Entrepreneur Media just had a three-day event in the mountains of Utah. I got home back to New York at midnight last night, feeling a little tired.
But then I thought about today's guest, and I realized, you don't know what tired is. Cole Brauer is the first American woman to race a sailboat solo, nonstop, and unassisted around the globe. She is now the co-skipper of off-road racing team Malaysia, and she has a new memoir out about her epic journey called First Light, which is out September 15th. Welcome, Cole.
Cole Brauer (4:34)
Thank you for having me. Wow, what an intro. Love it.
Dan Bova (4:39)
So we were talking before we started recording, you actually should be on a boat right now, but you elected to get on dry land to talk to entrepreneur.
Cole Brauer (4:51)
Yeah, I felt like maybe introducing you to all the pirates that I work with probably wasn't the best way to start. Maybe we get through this podcast together successfully, and then maybe I introduce you later. But I didn't want to scare you.
Dan Bova (5:04)
Yeah, okay. I am easily scared. You picked up on that correctly, so that's great.
So a lot of the people that I talked to on the show talk about their metaphorical journey in the business world, but there is nothing metaphorical about your journey. When did you realize this was something you wanted to do?
