Hi, I'm Valerie and you're listening to The Beauty Brains. This is a show where real cosmetic chemists answer your beauty product questions and give you an insider's look at the cosmetic industry. This is episode 408 I'm your host, Valerie George, and with me today is Perry Romanowski. Hi Perry.
Perry Romanowski (0:27)
Hey Valerie, are you in a beaker?
Valerie George (0:29)
Well, nope, all the beauty's in my brain. So on today's show, we're gonna cover lots of questions, including, is it a good idea to load up a product with active ingredients? What do you think of the Ziip Halo device? First, how do you remove mineral sunscreen from your skin? What do humectants really do in hair? And finally, what is Neogen Plasma Skin Regeneration? But first, that famous or infamous inane chit chat.
Perry Romanowski (0:57)
Valerie, you know how I hurt my leg some time ago. And you know, I run all the time, so.
Valerie George (1:04)
Correct.
Perry Romanowski (1:05)
So it was like a torn meniscus, and I went to physical therapy is what you're supposed to go to. And I've gone a few times, and I'm supposed to do these exercise at home. And you know, for the first time, I was good at the exercise. And then I kind of just stopped doing them.
Valerie George (1:19)
Well, I thought you had this really great stick-tuitiveness. What happened?
Perry Romanowski (1:24)
You know, I do have that for some things, just not for this.
I mean, and the other thing is like, how do you know when you're better at something? And I guess this also applies to like beauty products. Like, how do you know if something's working? Like, my leg is better, but I think if I would have done nothing, it would probably have been better too. So, I don't know. How do you know you're better?
Valerie George (1:47)
You don't.
Perry Romanowski (1:48)
Right. I mean, it still hurts when I bend it sort of a weird way. And then, you know, there's the whole doctor thing is like, hey, doc, it hurts when I do this. They'll say, well, don't do that. So, I don't bend my leg that way anymore.
Valerie George (2:02)
Well, why don't you just start doing the exercises?
Perry Romanowski (2:07)
Because it's not convenient. You have to wrap a rubber band around my staircase and I gotta do that. And then I have this app that I'm supposed to follow and the timing of the video is not on correctly. So, it's like, I have to lay on the floor. I don't have, you know what? If I was at the PT place, they have mats, they have it all set up, it's nice and easy. In your house, your cat is jumping on you when you're laying on the ground. It's just a lot of stuff conspired to make it harder.
Valerie George (2:38)
Yeah, I like actually going to physical therapy because they can provide corrections to your actions. It's amazing how fast the human body cheats. It finds the easy way out on an exercise. And unless you've been made aware of what your cheat is, and you know how to not do that, and you don't do another cheat that you're not aware of, the exercise would work. But it's so easy to just not be aware of that at home.
Perry Romanowski (3:04)
Yeah, it is. And so all of these things have conspired for me to not do it. But then my leg, it doesn't really hurt as bad as it did. So I don't know. I think I'm just going to stop going to PT. Because if I'm not doing the exercises, what am I doing?
Valerie George (3:18)
I would like to challenge you to do the exercises at home for one week.
Perry Romanowski (3:22)
All right. I will do that starting today.
Valerie George (3:25)
And then cancel PT.
Perry Romanowski (3:28)
I'm going to go one more time. You know, you make friends with these doctors, and they laugh at your stupid jokes, and you're like, oh, I like going there.
Valerie George (3:36)
I know.
Perry Romanowski (3:36)
I'm like, I don't know.
Valerie George (3:38)
Yeah, I had a good time. Remember last year when I fell outside this coffee shop in Albuquerque, and I wrecked my ankle, my knee, and my hip?
Perry Romanowski (3:46)
Yeah.
Valerie George (3:47)
Yeah, I had a great time at physical therapy. I had to go for like four months.
Perry Romanowski (3:51)
Wow.
Valerie George (3:52)
Yeah.
Perry Romanowski (3:52)
Well, I just missed a month because I was in Europe, but. Yeah.
