We’ve got good news and we’ve got bad news...The bad news is that no matter how hard you work, there’s always someone in the world that will work harder. The good news is that there’s a difference between working “hard” and working “smart”.

Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the 6 Figure Home Studio Podcast.
I am Brian Hood. And in case you missed this, I did a live workshop yesterday. I actually did two live online workshop yesterday. And the workshop was titled, How to Make a Living from Your Existing Audio Skills Without the Need for a Fancy Studio or Expensive Gear.
If you missed this workshop, and you want to see a replay of that, I'm going to have a replay up for the next 48 hours only.
You can get to that replay by going to the 6figurehomestudio.com/replay, or E-P-L-A-Y.
And I'm recording this before I actually do the workshops, but I'm just going to say that I'm assuming the workshops both went well. They were both a lot of fun, and the students got a lot out of them. As the time that I record this right now, we have something like 500 people registered for the workshop. And who knows, we may have a thousand people registered by the time I actually go live on Monday. But if you missed it, or you want to watch the replay, just go to the 6figurehomestudio.com/replay, and that'll be up and available to watch for the next 48 hours from the time this episode airs. So today's episode is all about increasing your studio's income. And I think this is one of my favorite episodes, personally. It's good to hear this stuff. It's good to get a reminder of all the things that I should be doing, because I'm not doing all of the things we talked about today. I have in the past, and even today, as I do this, I'm thinking of things that I need to do in my life, right now, based on the episode that I just heard. This is one of those episodes that takes action on your part. This is not a passive episode that you can just simply listen to in your car, or listen to while you're doing laundry. This one is probably going to take, you're going to need to take notes. You're going to need to write things down. So keep that in mind as you get into this. But I think no matter what, even if you can't write notes down right now, you are going to get a lot out of this episode. So here is my conversation with Chris Graham.
Chris Graham (2:07)
Brian, if you had to sum up for our listeners what their problem is, why they're listening to the 6 Figure Home Studio podcast, in the most condensed, shortest possible sentence, what would you say?
Brian Hood (2:20)
They need to earn more money.
I mean, even the 6 Figure Home Studio would like to earn more money. There is no cap on what you would like to earn. There's a cap on what you need to earn, but there's no cap on what you would like to earn. So I think this is a good episode to talk about things you can do to change that, things you can do to improve your income, to increase your studio's income in the simplest ways.
Chris Graham (2:42)
Yeah, and I know I'm like thinking, every time we record an episode, I'm thinking back to Chris Graham myself from 10, 15 years ago, and the lies I believed and the unwise things that I thought were true. And immediately 10 years ago, Chris Graham would have said, 25-year-old Chris Graham would have said, oh, it's not about the money. Y'all are sellouts. Y'all are evil human beings.
And Chris Graham from 10 years ago didn't have any kids and was a newlywed and was comfortable eating the meagerest affair.
And I hadn't really caught on yet that this sort of like make art for a living game is about survival. It's about doing it for a long time and ensuring that you don't go out of business so you can keep doing it. So that when you have the opportunity to work on a really amazing project, that you're there for it. That it wasn't like, oh crap, I'm working at Starbucks or McDonald's to make ends meet, and I'm not available because I flamed out. So this make more money thing, it's not about selling out, it's about longevity. How can you stay in the game so that you have the opportunity to work with somebody when that opportunity knocks?
Brian Hood (3:55)
Yeah, and just being able to be your own boss, to a degree. I mean, you still have clients who are really your boss, but you don't have a boss breathing down your neck every second of the day, telling you what to do and when to do it. It's the freedom of being able to kind of make your own schedule, be your own boss, and be the captain of your own ship. That's the other reason why a lot of people are drawn towards creating a business out of the passion for audio that they have.
