How does the 330-300 rule affect my mental health? Thanks for asking.
In our increasingly urbanized world, it's important to make time for reconnecting with nature. The latest study to grab our attention in this area was conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and published in December 2022 It looked into the so-called 330-300 rule, which was theorized by Spanish forest researcher Cecil Konijnendijk in 2021 It's made up of three criteria, each of which gives our mental health a boost. We should have three trees in view from our home, live in a neighborhood with 30% tree canopy cover, and live within 300 meters of a park.
Interesting, so what did we learn from the latest study? Research has interviewed over 3000 residents in Barcelona and found that less than 5% of them were lucky enough to live in an area which met all three of the three 3,300 rules criteria. Indeed, 22.4% of respondents had none of the elements.
A 12-item mental health questionnaire was used for cross-sectional analysis. It found that full adherence to the 3,3300 rule was associated with less medication use and fewer psychologist visits. What is it about green spaces that makes us calmer? In an urban environment where there is often lots of noise pollution, green spaces are places of calm and serenity which let us breathe, away from the hustle and bustle of public transport, for example. Furthermore, these spaces are also ideal for doing exercise, which in turn helps us achieve a healthier lifestyle. And the positive impact isn't limited to parks, it's also the case with other types of natural surroundings. A British study published in Science Direct in 2013 found that people were at their happiest when in a natural habitat, whether that be by the sea, atop a hill or mountain, or in a forest. What are the best ways to apply the 330-300 rule? The researchers behind the Barcelona study recognized that the 30% tree canopy cover element may not be feasible everywhere, in particular in compact cities. Indeed, just 8.7% of survey respondents lived in a neighbourhood that was sufficiently green by those standards. But a key conclusion of the study was that local authorities should provide citizens with more green space. That might involve tearing up roads and planting trees, for example, which would also reduce heat island effects. At an individual or household level, it's not simple to implement the 330-300 rule without turning your life upside down. But if you are already planning to move home, you could bear these factors in mind as a rule of thumb. Even if your home doesn't meet all the rule's criteria, knowing it exists might inspire you to reconnect with nature in other ways. It could be taking a detour through a park on your way home from work, for example, or going for a hike on the weekend. If you don't have a garden, you could consider adding some plants to your interior. That's been proven to improve our moods.
