How can you recognize a cult?

Thanks for asking. In 2024, a French government watchdog estimated that around 500,000 people were involved in cult-like groups, with tens of thousands of children growing up in these environments. While these figures come from France, experts say that the patterns are similar in many countries. But first, what is a cult? In legal terms, many democracies don't judge beliefs, they judge behaviour. Freedom of belief is protected. What authorities monitor instead are situations where that freedom is undermined. Specialists describe a cult-like situation as one where a group or individual uses pressure or manipulation to control a person, to the point of limiting their free will. This can have serious consequences for individuals, their families and society. Isolation from loved ones, loss of critical thinking, financial abuse, refusal of medical care and for children, disrupted education or violence.

So how can you tell if you're dealing with a cult?

There's no one single sign, but a combination of warning signals. These often include a gradual process of mental control, starting with seduction, followed by indoctrination, then isolation, along with sudden changes in behavior, and a break with family and friends. This is frequently paired with hostile rhetoric about the outside world. Media, science and institutions are portrayed as dangerous or corrupt. There may also be deceptive recruitment, increasing financial demands, and pressure or threats if someone tries to leave. All of this typically revolves around an opaque, authoritarian group led by a charismatic figure, presented as the sole holder of truth. No single criteria is enough on its own and not all carry the same weight, but one element is always present, psychological destabilization. In 2024, reports of cult-related abuses reached record levels. Experts point to isolation, growing mistrust of science, conspiracy thinking and the role of social media, which gives these groups unprecedented visibility and reach. A cult-like movement almost never begins with force, it usually begins with a promise. If you're in doubt, support organizations and cult awareness groups can help both victims and their families. There you have it.

Now you know how to recognize a cult. In under three minutes, we answer your questions and help you understand the true meaning behind the trends, concepts and acronyms that are making headlines. Listen along and you really will know for sure.
